The other night while driving down Glendale Ave. crossing over Grand Ave. I picked up Phoenix yard talking to a train. The scanner was showing a PL of 156.7. Anybody else listen to this and get the same PL or something diffrent? I had it as CS, but on search mode. This is the only time that I got a PL to show up on the scanner. As I got back past 101 it stopped showint the PL. Is my scanner going bonkers or is this the proper PL?

Kevin,

I listen to the UP down here and every so often I'll get a PL hit too. But I don't think the majority of the RR road traffic has tones, since other locos from different companies will be on the road frequency. My quess would be that possibly a specific radio has a PL tone for some reason, and it was never dropped. Since the dispatcher and others don't transmit and/or listen for the tone, it would really make no difference if one or two transmitted it.

However, having said that, I'm not sure why the Tucson yard can be talking at the same time as the dispatcher and the locos down here on 161.55 and not step on each other. I've searched for PL and DPL, but haven't found any consistency.

BNSF and PLs

In the greater LA area, PL codes have been entered on different yard radios so the dispatchers know who it toning them. Now, the BNSF San Bernardino sub has six different receiving locations, and lots of crews on the air at any one time, the DS generally isnt listening to all that chatter until someone tones him.

He then can see the PL and answer back directly to the yard who was calling him. Plus it cuts down on abuse from the yard...but not the crews which I assume dont have any PLs

OK. That was the first time that I picked up on a pl with them. I go out by the track to take pictures up on Grand ave west of loop 303 at times. So I have heard them talking but never saw a pl hit.
