• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Picked up a pair of SP50's, or so I thought...

According to my QRZ page I've got quite a few Motorola's so I'm fairly knowledgeable but not to proud to say I learn something new everyday. I picked up a pair of what I thought were SP50's off eBay (because there /\/\'s and they look cool) even know they may not be able to do ham bands (I could still use them for MURS or GMRS or something). When they arrived I noticed that for all intents and purposes they are a spitting image of SP50's, they do not say SP50 anywhere on them. What they do say is "Motorola Spirit HP UHF" (Model #P94YQS20G2AS). So can anyone shed some light on what Motorola's intent was on these? Did they make an SP50 and then an identical model but maybe less features. I would love to know the story behind these (if there is one).

Motorola did make Spirits and “Sp50+“ radios in an Sp50 housing. The Spirit in the Sp50 housing is basically an Sp50 but with preprogrammed to the business-dot band of memory serves.

That explains a ton!!!! Upon taking the battery cover off (of the parts unit) I noticed there is a tray that can be removed which exposes the housing and were the DIP switches could be changed however this does not have DIP switches because it's preprogrammed like you said. When I transmit on all 12 channels it's all UHF Business Band frequencies like what Dept. Stores use!!!! Very exciting!!! (Sorry I admit I'm like a kid in a candy store). And because I just have to have pairs now I've got to find a VHF Spirit HP to match my UHF. On top of that because I was originally looking for "SP50's" I still want to find one of each band!!!!!

Yep they basically are programmed to match the Spirit radios that were in the grey housings from the late 90’s / early 2000’s with the “business dot” frequencies. The VHF ones were MURS I believe / or the old VHF dot frequencies
