I live in South Bend Indiana, recently I've been able to pick up a handful of Chicago Police zones and some Chicago EMS traffic. Chicago is over 90 miles away and im using a psr-800 with a stock antenna. Granted it doesn't come in 24/7, I think its still impressive to be able to pick up their radio traffic. Anyone in Indiana, roughly in the same area (Michiana) who are able to do the same?

I think the 800 is a good part of it. I can get many surrounding counties and even the 122nd ANG in Fort Wayne. Weather/Atmosphere wise, plays a big part, but even on bad days, I still pick up Chicago's EMS MERCEI (Medic 2 Hospital) frequencies. But as the sun goes down, the scanner gets louder, picking up much more.

You may be able to get the MERCI hosptial bases. Mobiles are usually only 45watts some suburban FD and privates use it mostly. CFD and all ALS level calls are done by UHF telemetry or Cell phone. I have not made a VHF MERCI call in years. We call it all in over the dedicated telemetry cell phone.

I've heard mobiles on MERCI 1, I heard them talking about back boarding the patient and giving their vitals. I don't believe its CFD, I think its a private company. One thing I couldn't get was CFD main or south, I did pick up for a brief minute some chatter on a high rise tac channel.

In the early-mid 2000's while away at school, I occasionally picked up CPD in Milwaukee, a similar distance away.
This would have been with a Uniden BC245xlt and later a BC246T.

Its just nice to pick something up different then the same old burglary alarm or car accident without going out of my way to listen to feeds on here.

We've been having record highs with sunny hot clear weather, so its good weather for ducting especially being near Lake Michigan. This ducting and other tricks the atmosphere can do to radios is new to me. I've learned a lot from guys on RR and I'm glad I stuck around.
