Picking up Digital channels on my Analog scanner.

Ok I was listening to the online scanner feed from, http://www.wcpo.com/video/policescanner.html , And decided that I would do something a little different. I only have a pro-92 so I programmed in the Marcs channels and left the bank open. I then turned the volume down and started listening to the online feed while watching my scanner. In the hopes of being able to figure out what was who via the scanner picking out the talkgroups while listening to the calls.

Well a strange thing happened. I was manually going through the channels and I found two channels 868.5125 TG 04816(sounded like a police call) and 868.5125 TG 11376 (Senior Services) Now on these channels I heard completly clear voice. Not slightly garbled or anything like that. But completly analog communications on the Marcs system


Rather interesting.

Just how many analog talkgroups are on Marcs?

Oh and I have found about 14 or so TG Id's that are not in the database. Maybe I can get a 96 and see about getting these groups identified.

Anyone have 500 bucks to spare?

Miss-programmed Radio?
Old Equipment?

Looks like the Clermont County TRS, not MARCS.

This may sound completely stupid. But because i do not have a digital scanner I have stayed away from going to much in depth on the differences here.

What is the difference between the CC TRS and the Ohio Marcs system?

They're two completly different systems.

Look at the two listings in the RR database and you will see that they are completely different and what they cover. Look at the sites near you for MARCS control channels. The frequencies you listened to are not used by MARCS in your area.

To try and compare the two systems would be no different than asking, "What is the difference between the Clermont County system and the Hamilton County system?"

Ok wel lthe 868.5125 is part of the Marcs system. Listed in the database. And so is the talkgroup i hear. One of them anyway. Listed in the database.
So if these arent Marcs then why am I hearing them on a Marcs frequency and with a Marcs Talkgroup ID?

868.5125 is used by MARCS in Toledo (Lucas County) and Fairview (Guernsey County). It isn't used in Clermont County as it would cause interference with the Clermont County TRS.

11376 is listed as HS4 TAC5 Homeland Security Region 4 Operations on MARCS. In your original message you list 11376 as Senior Services and that is what it is listed as on the Clermont County TRS.

Because you are hearing this on a Clermont County frequency, with a Clermont County talkgroup, and analog modulation sure says to me it isn't MARCS. MARCS is 100% digital.

Talkgroups numbers are used over and over on trunked radio systems. It all depends on which system you are listening to that determines what the talkgroups are used for. For example, on the Franklin County system 11376 is SO LEADS

Well it was definatly senior services I heard on there. They were tellng a transport buss to "pick up a person at building 500 she would be out front in a green church dress."


And I am still hearing them intermittently. There isnt a chance in hell I could have bene hearing either of those two counties. I am in Clermont County and my antenna is blocked on the south side by an entire apartment building.

Maybe someone has been playing around. But now this has me perplexed.

I will leave it on this channel and let scanrec run. See if I can identify the people using the frequency.

Oh and on this channel I do get digital transmissions. But once in a while thes just break in.

It has digital and analog talkgroups, that is why you hear digital on it. Don't listen to individual frequencies, you need to listen to the system. You will find it is nearly all digital, there are only a few analog talkgroups on it.

Yes thats exactly what I was saying. That is the system I am hearing. Now the deal is that I was asking if there were any other analog talkgroups?

I guess I could sit here and watch it continuously for analog talkgroups.

But maybe someone else already has this knowledge?

If you look under the MODE column you will see it represented by either an "A" for Analog or "D" for Digital.
It doesn't get much simpler than that. :wink:

Ok I was looking all over that page. And I didnt see that column. Ok well looks like I was hearing the senior services after all. They are Analog. So ok. Mystery solved.

I swear I just need to get a digital scanner. A pro92 paired with a pro96 would pretty much round me out just right.

Also, I don't believe the WCPO Ch. 9 feed is scanning MARCS.
I believe they are only scanning the Cincinnati/Hamilton County system.
