picking up police and fire in cedar rapids from iowa city

Can anyone tell me how I might be able to pick up police and fire frequencies from cedar rapids to here in Iowa City. I have a roof mounted RS VHF-Hi/UHF antenna that covers 108-1300MHz. I can't seem to pick up ceadr rapids traffic with this antenna. Would a Yagi directional antenna do the job? Any suggestions helpful. Thanks.

Your not that far away so a decent antenna with high quality coax should be able to do it. The higher up the better also an antenna for the proper frequency does as well. A directional antenna will help even more.

From the times i have been out that way to visit friends, My RS Mag Mount VHF/UHF/800 will usually start to pickup the city about 2-3 miles south of EIA which should be a pretty good distance considering the strech bt Ia City and Cedar Rapids is not that far.

CRPD is digital. I am in North Liberty and get CRPD on my BCD996T with the stock antenna no problem.

what would be a good antenna for my bc796d scanner? i want to pickup johnson county digital as well as cedar rapids digital. also the surrounding conventional freq. counties. thanks jim
