Can I monitor these two agencies with my Uniden 246t?
I am new to trunking and to the area, any help would be awesome.

Currently, the Pima County Sheriff's Dept., is using an LTR MultiNet System, which can not be tracked by the scanner that you have. Likewise, the same applies to Marana, but if you have one of the newer scanners from Radio Shack or Uniden, you can monitor the Marana system, since its uses standard Project 25 modulation.

In the future, Tucson will have their Project 25 trunking system online, and Pima County has indicated they will make a move in this direction, since the entire state of Arizona plans on switching over to the same type of radios. Once that is done, you should be able to listen to all the action in your area.

Ron,

You do a great job on the Michigan stuff, but with all due respect, there's not much accurate information in your post about Arizona.

1. Marana is on a P25 exclusive system, but all talkgroups are encrypted. Marana PD CANNOT currently be monitored on any of the newer scanners from Radio Shack or Uniden, or any scanner for that matter. Hopefully that will change. But that's where we stand now. Scanners cannot monitor encrypted talkgroups.

2. Tucson's old plans for a P25 trunking system of their own evaporated several years ago. Tucson no longer has any independent plans for a new radio system. Tucson is on the Pima County committee (PCWIN) developing a new countywide trunked radio system that will be purchased with the bond money from November's election. It's basically county controlled. And although one could expect it would be P25 since most new systems these days are, no vendor has been selected (they are barely at the stage of collecting "needs analysis" reports). For all we know, ProVoice could come in and win the day (Pima County has had a giant EDACS system in the past). Not likely, but we just don't know.

3. It's unclear whether "once that is done" we will be able to listen to all the action in Pima County, since (again) no vendor has been selected, no RFP has been written, and it is unknown to what degree encryption will be used (Marana took the lead with 100% encryption).

4. There is no broad plan for the entire state to switch over "to the same type of radios". Like all states, many public safety professionals in Arizona "hope" that someday they will share a common radio system statewide. But there is simply no "plans" to implement that mere wish (and no state or local money allocated to it). Hopefully someday there will be.

I don't intend any disrespect, but I think accurate information is important (especially to people who may spend many hundreds of dollars on a new scanner, only to find out it will NOT monitor what someone told them it would).

Just an interesting factoid-the New BC396T comes with the frequencies for the Tucson TRS pre-loaded. What good that is-I have no clue.

Thanks for the continued info Dan.
