Pitt County: Switching from VIPER to the Pitt System

Quite a few users are switching from VIPER to the local system. For instance - GFR went from VIPER to the local Pitt system, and PCSO has switched from VIPER to the Pitt system - but is still patching to the VIPER talkgroup judging by the consistent radio ID and quality of transmissions.

Does anyone have the new talkgroups for PCSO? I'd love to switch off of VIPER since coverage is so poor out here.

I wonder if it's because of the requirement to buy p25 phase 2 radios and the upcoming switch over? I am still seeing lots of older RID numbers being used in different countries near my location (I am near Elizabeth City basically) too far from Greenville. But I worked for the VA in Greenville every day for years and commuted.

There has been some pretty significant range/connectivity issues reported by Greenville Fire and PCSO. I can't imagine it's over cost or phase 2 - the Pitt system is already phase 2 and I think the city of Greenville dropped a ton of money into Motorola's APX Next line. Pitt's system also seemed to be severely underutilized until now.

Pitt tends to old their list tight. From what I'm told, they don't even allow their neighboring counties have their stuff. I know that's a common complaint between depts along both sides of the county lines.

Pitt county sheriff's office is using talk group 37737 on the Pitt County 700 system for channel 1/dispatch. I've added this to the database submission it just needs to get cleared. I listen to this system with a small Yagi pointed toward my closest tower. I'm using a Whistler 1080. About a year ago I bought a Unication G4 and this is my mobile which works great for the simulcast systems as everybody knows.

I am looking for the tactical talkgroups for Greenville Fire/Rescue if anyone happens to discover them. I see where GFR Disp and GFR Channel 2 are already listed in the database.

I added these a couple of days ago... I'll find them and send them to you once I get into my laptop.

So much for other organizations assisting them, such as ECU Police listening to them. Other agencies officers usually carry police scanners especially if they work midnights and monitor neighboring departments. They just stopped that from happening.

Listening to VIPER and Pitt county right now. Yes VIPER appears to be dead as far as Greenville police go but what's curious is on the Pitt 700 system I'm not getting any traffic popping up that is encrypted? Maybe I just need to wait longer but Greenville Is usually pretty busy

Very strange not to hear Greenville after many many years of listening. As of right now I could tell you this on 700 system I'm hearing Pitt County sheriff, Ayden PD, all of Greenville fire including tactical channels these are all in the clear. As far as listening off the Viper tower in Greenville I'm still hearing Farmville PD, NCHP , and the city of Washington PD and Washington fire and EMS. For years Washington was on VHF and it was not pleasant to listen to but now that they're on Viper it's great. Of course Beaufort County sheriff can be heard off the Greenville tower also and that's in the clear. As as time goes on I'll keep monitoring and posting what I hear and what I don't hear.

The agencies with money and the time to get their radios reprogrammed can "listen" in...they used a shared/common key from the VIPER list of keys.

That said - I can tell you that none of them have Greenville's stuff in their radios. They can still raise GPD's dispatchers on county common if they're listening...but otherwise they're hosed with having the "jump" with BOLs, suspect descriptions, etc.

GPD officers have all said they hate the radios now that they're encrypted.

Oh well. Everyone's loss.
