If you are in the Pittsburgh area please join us on Sunday evenings at 21:00 hours local time for the Pittsburgh Area Scanner Net. We are a group of ham radio operators that enjoy this aspect of the radio hobby and like to get together to on the air to discuss scanners and anything related to scanning. We meet on the North Hills Amateur Radio Club’s 147.090 repeater.

We discuss scanning equipment, antennas, public safety and business radio systems, software, trunking and anything else that we deem related to the hobby. We have had several good nets talking about scanning railroad frequencies and I have learned a lot about the communications system used by the railroads. Many of the people that check in are also involved in firefighting or emergency medical services so we find ourselves talking about things like Code 3 Collectibles and other topics related to emergency services.

If you are not licensed program 147.09 into your scanner and listen in. If you wish to participate you can send email to wa3fkg@arrl.net with questions or comments on the net. Feel free to suggest topics that you would like to hear discussed on the net. One of the reasons that I have made this a formal net that meets each week is that I have been contacted by a number of scanner listeners who are interested in getting their amateur radio license. Once they find out just how easy it is and that you no longer have to take a mores code test many have joined the ranks. At least three of the people that I started out communicating with by email now check into the net and I talk with them on the air.

We also plan to organize some events this summer, possibly a group picnic. We have routine meetings at a local King’s restaurant we jokingly call “gatherings of the oblong table”. We had a table at the Wireless Association of South Hills club ham fest (The WASH Fest) and got to meet many scanner users. We also had a table at the Breeze Shooters ham fest in Butler and you can see pictures of that event on both the North Hills Amateur Radio Club and Skyview Radio Society web sites.

We are currently making plans during the summer months to take the net to the next level and form a club or monitoring association. So come and join in on the fun. Drop me a note in the mail or better yet check in on the net. You can also get some details on the scanner net at: http://www.qsl.net/wa3fkg or my blog site http://wa3fkg.blogspot.com Hope to hear from you.

Hi Ken

I am brand new to scanning (at the ripe old age of 53) and I have had my Uniden BC250D for about a month now.

I listened to the scanner net last night for the first time, and I enjoyed the hour very much. I can't recall where I stumbled across the info about when and what frequency.

I wrote down a couple of the frequencies that were shared last night, especially the MIL AIR one of 139.55. I recall the guy making a point of saying it was AM. When I programmed it into my scanner, it defaulted to FM if I am not mistaken, and I had to change it.

How often is that necessary and how would a newbie know when it needs to be changed from the default mode that the BC250D offered? And what about the steps? I have just been using the default there as well.

To a newbie like me, it seems like there is a very big chance of missing an awful lot, if you were on the right frequency, but the wrong mode.

Or am I missing something?

I mainly plan to use my BC250D in the car, so I bought a mag mount antenna for the roof of my Honda CR-V. As a matter of fact, I bought it from Jack at Whiteside Electronics. I sure am glad I found him, and happy to hear you mention him last night.

I look forward to listening again next week, and hope to pick up even more...I will get the hang of this yet!
