I am having a problem with my Uniden BC898T scanner with a DPL for a specific frequency. I live in New Jersey and monitor Neptune City Police 154.160 DPL 043. However, I noticed I wasn't getting much activity off of the channel, so I put the unit in PL/DPL search mode and locked on to the frequency. My results were as follows: Sometimes when there is a transmission, the DPL appears instantly. Other times, it will appear mid way through the transmission, and yet other times it won't appear at all. My question is, is this a problem with my scanner, or does it have something to do with their radio system ? Any help would be greatly appreaiated. Thanks.

Not sure about problem but you can put in freq with DPL and make the next channel the same freq without DPL. Maybe this would help in trying to figure it out. Good Luck

I don't think that there is a problem with your scanner. I have some trouble myself monitoring frecquencies that use a DPL code. When I enter the DPL code I can only hear dispatch transmissions and no
incoming transmissions. To solve this problem I do not enter any code.

The system may be transmitting the code at a lower level than is recommended. They should be transmitting it at 1000 Hz (1 kHz)deviation. Maybe theirs is lower and the scanner is having trouble hearing it. Most commercial radios will decode lower than the average scanner, although they could be having the same problems with their radios.

Just thought of something. Does the user audio in general sound low? Maybe it's a SNFM system that only transmits at 500 Hz CDCSS at spec. If all the audio sounds low, change the mode to that (NFM in Uniden-eese) and see if it solves the problem.

This reminds me of the Dover Township Fire Dispatch frequency. It has a DPL and during the transmission the scanner would stop detecting the DPL and than redetect it later in the transmission. I have to keep it in CSQ in order to hear all of what they say.

I've seen that with a local system. It's SNFM and the PRO-96 doesn't like the low level of the CDCSS. Unfortunately, the PRO-96 also doesn't have a SNFM mode to deal with it.

Thanks to all of you for your input to my question. I just have it in CSQ now, as there are no other agencies here on the same freq. that interfere.
