PL tone question?

If i enter a pl tone into my scanner, what will I hear?

The pl tone must be associated with a frequency. You enter a frequency then enable pl on that frequeancy and you will only hear transmissions on that frequency that also have the pl tone.

If persons doing the transmitting are using a tone, you don't need the tone to monitor. Only if you're TRANSMITTING too will you need to use the tone for the other parties in the "talk group" to hear each other thereby having a "private" group.

If you're listening on a scanner, and there is a frequency being used by 10 different groups, all using pl tones to keep their groups separate, they won't hear each other....only their own group. But you with your scanner will hear everyone. No tone usage required.

True, but how many of us want to listen to all 10 agencies on one freq at one time? I use a PL on everything.

PL Tone Question....

First, the PL TONE isn't something you as a listener can HEAR. It is a subaudible tone sent out by the transmitter so that a receiver set to "monitor" or "hear" that tone will open and allow the listener to hear the transmission. Is this what your question REALLY was? What does a PL Tone "sound" like? Steve/KB8FAR
