PLAINVIEW, Texas -- Hale County commissioners on Monday unanimously approved setting aside $59,000 in a special line-item budget account to fund the county's share of making its first-responders' emergency radios compliant with federally-required P25 upgrades.

Does Hale County have different requirements than everyone else has that requires them to switch from digital to analog? "Program 25 narrow-band compliant digital radios which must be in place by Jan. 1, 2013"

"They explained that the conversion of public safety radios from analog to digital has been mandated by the U.S. Congress and is being coordinated by both the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Communications Commission."

I thought they just had to meet the FCC requirement to be narrow band compliant?

This digital/narrow-band nonsense is becoming the biggest flim-flam on small communities/counties since Professor Harold Hill organized a band in River City, Iowa. At a minimum, it has led to the exposure of multiple reporters as technological dunces that are willing to take a public info release provided by a radio system salesman to the agency being shaken down and report it as fact without asking any questions.
