Stanton County plane crash proves fatal - Norfolk Daily News - Norfolk, NE
STANTON — A plane first reported missing over the weekend apparently crashed late Sunday or early Monday in rural Stanton County.
Keith Harmon of Stanton County emergency management confirmed Monday afternoon that two people died as a result of the crash. No additional information was being released late Monday afternoon. There were reports Monday evening that one person in the plane initially survived the crash but later died.
A dispatcher for the Stanton County sheriff’s office confirm Monday afternoon that a plane had crashed in Stanton County about one mile north and one mile east of Tony’s Steakhouse, which is located 11 miles east of Norfolk along Highway 275.
Harmon said searchers with the Civil Air Patrol reported finding the wreckage about 4 p.m. Monday.
Law enforcement officers on the scene blocked nearby roads to keep onlookers from getting anywhere close to the scene.
An ambulance was seen leaving the scene of the accident.
The plane is reported to be a single-engine Piper Comanche that left Chamberlain, S.D., about 5 p.m. Sunday en route to the Millard Airport with two men aboard.
A spokesman for the Civil Air Patrol said the pilot is about 60 years old and the passenger about 50. No names were provided.
Daryl Nelson of the Nebraska Civil Air Patrol said South Dakota search crews had been looking from Chamberlain to Sioux Falls and down to Sioux City. Nebraska crews had been searching from Omaha to Sioux City.
"We’re doing everything we possibly can to locate the plane," Nelson said. "The hope is that the plane set down somewhere and they have just not been able to get in touch with anyone."
Because the trip was to be made under visual flight rules, a flight plan was not required to be filed. The pilot indicated before takeoff that he intended to follow Interstate 90 east to Sioux Falls, S.D., before turning south toward Omaha, covering about 320 miles.
Chamberlain is located in south central South Dakota and is roughly 240 miles from Omaha when traveling in a direct line.
