MAYFIELD VILLAGE -- The Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office confirmed to Channel 3 News that two people have died after a single engine plane crashed in the Mayfield Village area this afternoon shortly after leaving the Cuyahoga County Airport.
The plane exploded into a ball of fire after crashing at the edge of the woods east of St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church on SOM Center Road, three miles from the airport.
Officials say the debris field was 1,500 feet long, but the church was not damaged.
Two people have been confirmed dead, but authorities continue to look for others as it is not known how many were in the plane.
The FAA says the plane was heading to Buffalo
Witnesses say they heard the plane flutter, and then saw it take a nosedive. Witnesses ran to the crash and say the plane was in a thousand pieces.
They say there was an explosion and fire. A trench was made where the plane crashed into the ground.
A witness who works in the area said they could feel the explosion moments after the plane was heard flying over their building.
Another witness said they heard a loud noise like thunder and then a crash.
Smoke can be seen coming out of the woods. Fire crews are on scene.
The FAA says it will investigate the crash, which could take several weeks.
No further information was available.
