I can't figure out how to do this, so thought I'd ask.

I have a 246T in the truck, running Advanced Virtual Control. I want to take the headphone audio to the mic input on the laptop, and then play the audio over the laptop. Mostly so I can just hit the mute button on the laptop and silence all of the sound with one button (GPS and other things running on laptop).

However, the laptop doesn't allow the mic input to be monitored and played over the speakers. What program would take the input and convert it to wav audio (or something else) that the computer will play? I don't want it to be recorded and then played back...needs to be real-time.

If a program would do mp3 encoding that could also work.

Try double clicking on the speaker icon in the lower right corner. Then check the settings to make sure the input does not have the Mute box checked. Also check the input level if you haven't already done so.

When I plug the cable into the port on the computer, it asks if I want it to be a line-in or microhphone. I've tried both, and neither works.

Neither of the inputs is muted. None of the outputs are muted. No sound.

Have also checked the input level by doing the "Test Hardware" tests.

I have a Dell Insperon 600m , as well as a newer dell at work - neither of them allow this to happen.

They are both using SigmaTel audio on board...

This is a Dell Inspiron 6400, and it also uses the SigmaTel audio.

No, not yet. Was hoping it wouldn't need a workaround, and maybe I was just missing something. That is the next step, I guess.

Is your sound working ok for other applications? Are you using a stereo, or mono cable?

I have a Inspiron 1300 ad use line in for audio when it asks and it works perfect.

After you click on the speaker icon in the system tray to bring the Master Volume mixer, have you clicked Options, then Properties and tried the different Mixer Devices in the DropDown List?

There might be a selection that says "Line In/Mic In", if so, click that one and make sure the Volume Slider isn't at the bottom and the Mute checkbox isn't checked...

There are separate properties for inputs and outputs. On the input side, the line-in is *not* muted.

On the output, there is no option for Line-in or microphone; only CD, wave, and Midi.

Sound works perfect for all other applications. Stereo cable. When I did the "test your hardware" test, I could hear the audio from the scanner over the microphone input. I just need a program now that will take a line-in or microphone, convert it to wav, and play it.

The other option (which I've been able to successfully do) is run an encoder and streaming server, then connect with Media Player or Winamp. Problem with this is it's a hog on CPU cycles.

Woohoo! Looks like I got it figured out. While the above post was not the exact solution, it pointed me in the correct location. So, many thanks.

I wound up having to download the drivers again, modify an .ini file before install, and then install them. I now have an input monitor, line in volume, and microphone volume. I don't have the cable to connect the scanner to the laptop, so I can't 100% confirm it works, but I'll check tonight when I get home.

This is where I found the solution:
