Why not just get one of those small amplified speakers usually sold along with the iPod's and connect it to your scanner ? Oh, sure, you may have to charge the thing at some point, but if portability is the issue, you'd do well with one of those little can speakers. There are many to choose from now, just go to wallymart and look for one that suits your needs.

Church fund-raiser fish fry dinners only supply plastic knifes and forks because the lawyers think we're too stupid and backward to be trusted with metal ones. Uniden isn't the only one to disable using the earphone jack for driving an external speaker. But this is what you get when you sue manufactures for every little thing. The device has a volume control - use it. The knife has a sharp edge - be careful. Is it the fault of the anvil manufacturer if you pick it up and then drop it on your foot?

But it would be nice if Uniden had a second custom connector on the radio with full or maybe even boosted audio level and sold an optional matching external speaker that could be clipped to a lapel to hear the scanner.

Dumb idea. First of all, that's why they invented headphones. Use them. The existing jack put out enough volume to hear under any reasonable conditions.

Second, a more powerful audio amplifier powering a speaker is going to kill battery life. Headphones use <100mW, a speaker can draw more than 1000mW.
