Hi there guys, I was wondering if I might get some help identifying two pieces of equipment I would like to make use of if possible. At my old job, we helped the owner of a warehouse empty out his facility after selling it to my last employer. The facility was an old Rhode Island tile mill in operation up until the early to mid 2000s. Being an avid computer builder, one of the items being tossed grabbed my attention. It's a steel-encased Radio Frequency Systems Box, white to light gray in color built by Radio Frequency Systems. I believe it was manufactured in Canada as it has it included in it' serial information.

The box has several LED indicators with the words GAIN/ADJ, POWER, AGC. There are two cables that are bolted into the box in the shape of a U with the left on each cable labeled IN, DL in the center and OUT on the right. There is also a power socket with 110-240 VAC. Finally there are two large cable sockets labeled BASE and the other SERVICE.

It also came with another box, a CSI (Cellular Specialties Inc) device. That is the black box on top in the photo in the link I've provided. They're obviously communications devices. I still have some contact with the previous owner but now that he no longer owns the building we rarely see him to ask. The CSI box was made by Cellular Specialties Incorporated, and they are still producing a similar but much newer box on their web site. The new version is pretty expensive, and I started wondering how serious a piece of equipment this is, and if utilizing it would break any FCC laws?

My main interest is that it could somehow be used as a shortwave radio. I've no desire to speak or send any signals, or disrupt any transmissions. Listening however, has always been fascinating for me. At this point though, I don't even know what these are or how to use them, and I was hoping you guys might be able to help. If what I have can't be used without some type of authorization, I would also like to know that lol. Anyhow, I'll post a pic and give you the specs.

The information is as follows:

(Box 1)

Radio Frequency Systems

Canada: 1634B-48900

FCC ID: IWD48900

SN 521040-010 Model 48930

Box 2 (black)

CSI Model 510 SMR Band
SN 5102606
FCCID NVRCSI 0-01

It's a bidirectional amplifier for 800MHz used to provide coverage of an outside system in a building.

Thanks guys, by coverage do you mean like an intercom? The second FCCID is FCCID NVRCSI 510-01. I found the companies that produced them and yes the black box or the newest version of it does seem expensive. Do you guys think they are rental pieces? Should I send them back to the companies? I've no idea if the previous owner even knew what they were but he didn't seem particularly interested. You should see the old antique safe he sold, it was gigantic. I saw FCC on both items and must admit; began wondering if they are something you need a license for.

They are for linking a system with poor coverage inside the building to antennas inside the building, to improve coverage inside.

Does anyone know if it would be difficult to get them operating, and if so, what if anything would I be able to listen to?

Cell Phone Amplifier

That is just a model of cell phone amplifier. However, they come in different versions for each carriers network, and frequency. There are currently FCC issues with using these as they amplify signals without really being discriminate about the signal.
My last job used many types of these to provide cellular service in large warehouses where signal was not getting into the building from local cell towers. New models need to be registered as they sometimes caused interference with the local towers.
I had four of those in use after Hurricane Katrina in 2004 with antennas mounted to the roof of a barge to extend cell phone reception for near shore cleanup crews.
Fast forward to the BP Spill of 2010 and the same four were put into use for extending cell phone reception again. But this time the 806-956 MHz unit burned out after two days of use. It seems the US Coast Guard and their 800 MHz radios caused it to try to amplify these signals and overloaded the receiver.
Probably not worth using, unless it just happens to be on the correct frequency band for your current cell phone.
