• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I think it's a little late to be asking. The time to do your research is before you place the order.

The questions I have for you:

Who is going to program the radios?

What type of radio system are they going to be used on?

Are these radios new or used? If used, what is the firmware version on the radios?

The reason I ask about the firmware, is that when the PM-1500 first came out, they had a scan problem. They would open up on a PL received signal the first time and then would not open up the audio again. You had to change channels, take it out of scan or do something else and then it would open up one time again. Motorola had to do an upgrade on the firmware in both the radio and the M5 control heads.

Once you get past that scan and open up the audio problem, the radio is a good radio. It just takes some getting use to to do the programming if you have never done the programming before. It uses the same software as the XTL series radios. Channel info goes in the zone, scan channel info goes in the scan list, scan list number goes in the personality.

I try to keep the 3 different sections all in the same zone. That way if you make any changes, it is easy to keep them all straight. If you go back and add a zone, it will screw up all the scan lists and you will have to go through each one to make sure every body is in line with where they should be and not a zone out.

You will need one of the USB programming cables to plug into the mic connector, HKN6184C. Then you will need the software to do the programming. If you have an account with MOL, you can download the software and any updates that may come along.

Hope this answers some of the questions you may have had.

I think it's a solid radio. We have quite a few of them still in service. I used to have one in my work truck, but replaced it with a more feature rich and higher tier XTL5k. What I really like about the PM1500 (and the XTL1500 for that matter) is the giant volume knob. Makes it real easy to adjust volume while driving with little effort. Especially in darkened conditions....less effort to feel around for the knob while keeping your eye on the road, and you can adjust it with one finger instead of two.
