That being said, You are wrong. If you go from this screen to the top and click on "Your Account," then click on "Your Info" That will take you to personal settings fields where you scroll down to the 5th field from the end titled "Fourm Timezones," click on the little arrow to the side of that and adjust the time stamp to fit your timezone (ie. my mountain timezone is set to "GMT -6 hours) and it is my current time when I post.
What was wrong with blutarsky's post? His information seems to be quite accurate.
1. A user posts to the forum. The server stores the post, and marks it with the SERVER's time.
2. A user browses the forum. The server generates HTML by taking the stored post time, adjusting it for the browsing user's time offset as set in their profile, and delivers it to the browser.
Example:
a) User A has his profile set to "GMT - 5" and posts to the forums
b) Server, whose time is currently 21:33 UTC, stores the post, marking it with timestamp 21:33.
c) User B, who has his profile set to "GMT - 7", browses the forums.
d) Server takes 21:33, subtracts 7, and displays 14:33 to User B.
e) User A looks at his own message, and sees 16:33 (21:33 minus 5).
If User A had his profile set to "GMT + 6", it would not impact what User B sees. User B's display is a product of the server's time and his (User B's) own profile setting.
The profile setting has absolutely nothing to do with the time stored on the server. It only affects the times seen when browsing the forum. If it worked otherwise, it would be impossible to maintain a chronological post order. When browsing the forums, you'd see posts that appeared to be "out of order".
EDIT: Maybe you thought this part of the post was wrong: "the timezone settings of users have nothing to do with how the dates show for you". What blutarsky meant was that the timezone settings of OTHER users have nothing to do with how the dates show for you. The only things that affect how times appear for you are the actual posting time (the server's time) and YOUR profile setting.
