Must've been some radio testing, my radio (396) was unable to track the talkgroup, but it's either 37104 or 21008, listen on 476.2125.

Scanner listening never cease to amaze me! :)

I've heard this the last couple of weeks off and on. The last three or four days it has been constantly on when I have checked. It doesn't sound like a poem, more like a recording of a guy reciting various phrases. Probably some kind of audibility testing to see how it sounds at various locations. I read quite a while ago that once the system was up and running they would do "one quarter mile grid testing". A friend of mine told me he saw a Westchester County van/RV with several antennas on top with signage on the side saying radio testing proceeding slowly while people inside were making notations on clipboards.

The last three or four days it has been constantly on when I have checked. TG 21008 is transmitting the recording on 476.2125(South Zone) and 470.5500(North Zone). TG 37104 is transmitting a constant tone on 476.0750(South Zone) and 470.3500(North Zone).

My thought on not being able to track the TG, is that if your scanner was not turned on when they started transmitting your scanner would not have heard the OSW(Outbound Signalling Word) that contains the TG info. This happened to me about a week ago. The home scanner picked up the TG when it came on, while I was at work, and my wife had to listen to it all afternoon.

Thanks for your insight on that.

I suppose that the scanner will start following a talkgroup only when the OSW is transmitted on the control channel? In this case, the talkgroup is already active so no OSW is transmitted from control channel?

Hello,

Motorola and other trunked systems have provision for "late entry" of a radio so a talkgroup "go to this frequency" message is transmitted on the OSW while the talkgroup is active. The ID of the radio transmitting is only sent at the beginning but that is not used by the scanner.

With the "late entry" provision, how often would the OSW be transmitted? Would it only be retransmitted if another radio on the TG signs on sending an ISW? If this were the case would I be correct to say that a scanner would not not be able to track the TG if the TG was already active when the scanner was turned on?

I can hear the control channel L+C from my location here in Milford, Ct. and also hear the tone on 470.350 and the guy saying the poem on 2 frequencies, 470.550 and 476.2125, but when I enter the base freq and offest and step as in RR it does not trunk correctly on my Pro-96. Anyone have the same result or figure out the correct enteries for a Pro-96?

Also, if I manually hold the scanner on any of the above freqs that have the tone or poem on them, it shows the Talk group continiously as 21008 and 37104 so it is always on there, not only in the beginning.
