I'm curious if anyone knows about any police departments (in the U.S.) that still do not use two way radios. I've never heard of any, but I'm willing to bet that there is at least one.

Some small towns in Vermont have "constables". You might check the websites for Ira or Sandgate. They are pretty small towns. The Town Constable might have a annual budget of $100 and might not have radios. But they might have a cellphone to try to reach the State Police dispatcher. Peter Sz

Everytime OpenSky crashes cellphones and wireless internet cards is what Milwaukee PD relies on.

There's only one I know of. "Hello Sara, have you seen Andy?"

Andy Griffith's department did have radios. Their car had a large VHF-Lo antenna and Motorola radio (Twin-V I believe) and a Motorola base station. They also used some Eico ham and CB radios in a few episodes.

Yes. They would, at times, use them to talk to Mt. Pilot and Raleigh and even between the car and office, but not very often.

Can't see the control head in the car so I can't say what the radio is but the base microphone is Motorola, but I can't see the radio clearly enough. Actually those other radios were an Eico 720 crystal controlled (FT-243 type crystals) 75W input Novice CW only transmitter and the other a Heathkit "Lunch Box" ham transceiver.

Not unless a key was attached and Barney knew Morse code. (;->)

"even the bedrock pd had radios"

Yeah, every now and then the chief thought he was speaking to a stone.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled Nextel already in progress.

Well, what about a police department that doesn't use hand held radios, and relies strictly on mobile radios?

And, I asked this once a long time ago, but never got an answer: What's the largest city police department in the US that still uses VHF low band as their primary method of communication? I'm looking for cities, not state police or highway patrols.

Northbridge Mass - low band for PD possibly - not a city but a larger town - maybe 15,000 population - check the Worcester County listings

I think that maybe 1 or 2 PDs in Connecticut still use lowband - maybe in New London County or Fairfield County

Maybe some of the countys in the mountains near Fresno Calif still have Sheriffs on low band - not a city PD - but there are few city PDs in those mtns

Adams County Ohio or Clermont County Ohio - Sheriff or police on 39.98 for many many years - just east of Cincinatti

I cant think of anyone else that might be on lowband
