Agents Surround Vehicle Near White House

WASHINGTON -- A distraught man threatened to blow up his van a block from the White House on Tuesday, prompting a standoff with police.
Debra Weierman, spokeswoman for the FBI's Washington field office, said the man driving the red van claimed to have 15 gallons of gasoline.

He said he would "blow it up if he doesn't get his child back," she said.

Police attempted to negotiate with the man.

The incident occurred at the corner of 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue along the parade route that President Bush will travel on Thursday after his inauguration.

Streets are being closed and pedestrians evacuated from an area around 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, Northwest.

President Bush is not at the White House, as he is taking part in an inaugural event at the MCI Center.

WUSA-TV reports the van drove through a security checkpoint and was stopped by law enforcement, at which point the driver allegedly made some type of threatening comments.

Witness John Taylor was in a nearby building. He tells The Associated Press he saw police stop two vans, one white, the other red. The white van drove away, but the red van stayed, and Taylor says the police officers who confronted the driver seemed very agitated. It's not clear what the issue was with the white van. Taylor and his colleagues were initially not allowed to leave their building.

Another witness, Nick Wutherich, visiting from Texas, says he walked past the van and describes the driver as looking like a hippie, with a blank expression on his face. Wutherich says all of a sudden he heard screams and saw police with guns drawn converging on the van and ordering people out of the area.
