police in the dark?

my wife and i work cleaning our church in Northglenn. this morning we received a call from the alarm company advising of several alarms going off at the church and they were dispatching Northglenn p.d. drove to the church and on the way heard the call to respond on my pro 96 . about 2 minutes after arriving 1 unit arrived. i told him i heard the call and with a puzzled look he asked you can hear us ? yes i replied for about 2 years. are they that naive to not realize that digital scanners now exist ?

It kinda of funny around here as well. Some of the beat officers ( and it's not just cops) I know are totally oblivious to the fact that they still can be heard. I actually new a cop who thought that when he went to another talk group his conversations was private.
I really put the fear in him when i told him that even on most cell phones there is a machine, some where, out there, that could listen in in what ever he says!

Now when ever I call him he ask me to give him a call on the land line...

great, now he's going to go to his boss and ensist they encrypt. Just messing. I'm sure most of the cops don't even know how the system works. They just turn it to the channel they want and they know that they will be connected to dispatch or other units. That is all that is important to them. The officer probably hasn't run into the problem of digital scanners very often since the radios aren't cheap, people looking to just get a scanner for the heck of it i'm sure aren't up to spending 500 bucks

There is always a "Machine", but realistically digital cell phones are private unless the person has access to the switch. (and a court order to make it legal).

I'll never be able to afford one of those machine or the lawyer to get a court order...

I would venture to say that most criminals aren't aware of trunking and/or digital comms and which scanners are required to monitor them.

If you have access to the switch You won't need a court order, just a job working on the switch. You must monitor a line before you work on it. BUT YOU COME UNDER FCC RULES TO SO. REPEATING ANYTHING YOU HEAR, IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS ACT.
Most common one I remember on land lines was hubby calling home on lunch time at 8PM and getting a busy signal. WE got these almost every night and had to check the line.
