Police: KC Couple Posing As Evacuees Charged

POSTED: 7:38 am CDT September 8, 2005
UPDATED: 7:45 am CDT September 8, 2005

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. -- On the very street where a church has welcomed two dozen evacuees from Hurricane Katrina, police say a pair of panhandlers tried to profit from the tragedy.

Members of Village Presbyterian Church took in 13 people who arrived by charter bus from Houston on Tuesday. A second bus delivered 12 more evacuees Wednesday.

In the same neighborhood, a man and woman posing as homeless Louisianans knocked on doors and stopped motorists to ask for donations. Homeowner Marvin Wilson said that the couple had a bag of groceries when they requested -- and got -- a donation from him.

Contacted by a suspicious driver, police identified the two as Kansas City residents wanted on outstanding drug warrants. They now face a Prairie Village charge of illegal solicitation as well.

That's pretty much how I feel about it, plus people who do things like this make the general public more cautious about making donations to the people who really need them.

I was wodering about that today on how long it would be before someone started to use that scam... Especialy after the paper said the feds was going to issue 2g to hurricane survivors.

We had some pan handlers here in Wichita who worked our town pretty good untill they was spotted getting into there 2000 model lincoln town car that was parked behind a store. It was estimated they netted over $500 a day for a month, before they was caught.

Heres my scam.... "BOUGHT A TRUCK IN THE 90's...WILL WORK FOR FUEL"
or better yet.... "FOR SALE - 1994 FORD F-150 - CHEAP - WILL TRADE FOR BIKE"
