Radar Detectors... 'A fool and his money are soon parted!' ;)

Here, watch this...

YouTube - Radar detector Before Sharp curve. Great Save!

Ths EXACT same situation happened to me 3, yes 3 times on a Sunday morning drive north on the 101 to Santa Maria. 3 CHiPs within 10 miles of each other, just north of Santa Barbara. There were very few cars at 7:30AM that particular Sunday, and I was cruising 85.. as soon as I heard he detector go off, right quick down to 65, and as I rounded the corner, there in the turnout, the CHP Cruiser... pass him, back up to 85... It then happens 2 more times. I beat all 3!!!.
They work, only if you are smart in listening to them and responding properly.

Get an Escort 9500IX, I've had several 3-4 mile detections under the right conditions. RDDs do NOT replace any sort of awareness, they just add to it. Depending on where you live, a lot of cops will not leave it on and will turn it on when they think you're speeding. Whereas other places, they leave their radar on all the time.

Saying RDDs are useless is quite foolish. Granted, it's not going to save you from every ticket, but used the right way, it will assist you. Radaring has hardly become a "science".

I'm getting more hits using the Bel, but I'm testing these in the house with AC to DC converter too. The Cobra doesn't have any hits.

Kinda curious. I have the Geiger counter parked near the radar detector too. My thinking was cosmic ray burst inadvertently tripped the detector and thus I should hear the Geiger counter as well.

Props for my thinking, right?

Both are crap compared to valentine and escort, but between the two, Bel, hands down.

That statement is so TRUE!!

However I'd rather drive without a radar detector than drive with a Bel. Not sure why people say Bel's are so good? They false more than any radar detector out there. A rabbit runs across the road, and the Bel goes off. Drive next to an antenna farm/call tower, and the Bel goes off again. Rubbish!

I don't know about their higher end models. And I'm too lazy to see if their GPS model learns falses. I say the only model worth getting is the Escort 9500ix. Yes, there are a couple more sensitive models out there, but when you get soooo many falses, it drowns out the real thing.

I notice this with my cell phone and WIFI form the laptop! This is an older model: Bel 545i.

The best radar precaution you can take is to keep that speedometer at 55. You do that and our radars and lasers aren't worth a crap.

I use the cheap $40 cobra...

As long as you understand the laws of physics and dont expect miracles from the device, they work great.

When you're in traffic it works well... Out alone on a highway, its not going to work until it is too late.

As I previously stated, I am very happy with my Beltronics Vector 995. In the future, I might entertain buying a Passport Red Line since it even more sensitive to radar.

Just yesterday, I heard "Laser" coming out of my Vector 995. I turned around and headed back down the service road to find the target vehicle. Most of the time, my radar detector emits a laser warning while I am in the line of fire. Bam, there he was, big as day, handing out a ticket. So, I immediately got on the CB and announced my find. Hopefully, others heeded warning.

Woodway, Texas PD has a new toy, Laser. One day, while walking into a local grocery store beside a friendly Woodway officer, I asked, "I saw a unit holding what appeared to be a laser outside the window of a patrol car. I asked, "were you using Laser?" He stated, "yes."

Yes, a $40 unit works as well; however, the anti-falsing is what I pay for. The more you spend, the quieter the operation. I have owned several units that drive me nuts. I want accuracy of detection. So, that is why I pay more for a radar detector.

I can recall when Whistler came out with "Perfect Windows." It was supposed to increase the accuracy of legitimate signals. Did it false? Sure it did. However, my Beltronics Vector 995 is pretty quiet. One day, I will purchase one with more filters, GPS function, etc. For now, I use my arsenal: a) radar detector; b) PSR 500; c) Cobra 25 with K40.

how not to get a speeding ticket.

1) keep pace with the flow of traffic

2) keep with a cluster of cars - hard for them to ferret out a single individual

3) don't slam on your breaks, just let off the gas pedal - they see that front end drop down from putting on your breaks your done

4) when up on the highway with minimal traffic set your cruise control for no more then 5 m/h above speed limit

5) on long trips or day trips i keep a CB tuned to ch19 - i have found this is better then any radar detector on the market

i have followed these guidelines for years and have never got a ticket for speeding since i have been driving. and i lived in one of the ticket capitals of the world NJ.

i think after 15 years of driving and no tickets except for 1 for having a bulb illuminating the license plate out, i can safely say that these guidelines work.

I've had a Escort 9500i (factory upgraded to 9500ix) for several years. It was awesome when it was 9500i and continues to be even more awesome as a 9500ix. Paid for itself several times over I'm sure.
