Police Scanner

I live in Torrington and have an analog police scanner. They recently went digital and Radio Shack and others say they cant get the codes etc and that they have all been encrypted. But areas around Torrington ...Lingle, Ft. Laramie can get the codes etc if they have bought a digital scanner. Radio shack says it doesnt make a difference if we buy a digital scanner because we cant get the codes etc. Does anyone know anything about this?

There are only certain talkgroups that have been Encrypted, all the main ones are open. The town of Torrington is still on their old system but the county Sheriff and Fire channels in on the WyoLink: Statewide Interoperability Matrix Trunking System. Any Digital Scanner will work great, for Highway patrol and local monitoring.

Several years ago, when the Casper area went digital, Radio Shack said that they don't have the "codes" for the scanner. What they were meaning was the Talkgroup I.D.'s. Should I be surprised that the sales staff are STILL misinformed about their scanners? - Tom

I avoid RS if at all possible. They are usually worthless in the scanner arena, its not their fault, they just don't know.

Are you talking about frequencies instead of codes?

I recommend programming in the system as found in the database and you should be good to go. As far as the encryption goes, I don't know. Like Kc0wkp has said, you can still hear a lot of other things as well.

That is incorrect. Torrington has gone about 90% digital. There are a few patches in the system analog to digital. As far as the data base there is a ton more info that needs to be added for Goshen County.

All I see on the digital is mutual aid the county sheriff and county ems and veteran fire as mentioned.

If more needs to be added then maybe someone can program their digital scanner with a wildcard setup to pickup if there is any new talk groups.
