What type of scanner do I need to listen to the OPP? I used to pick them up with my Uniden Bearcat/Sportcat 200 but since they moved to the new comm center I have been unable to get anything. I assume they have gone digital?? Even the local PD are gone. I get the broadcast but the talk is all garbled. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

RS Pro96/2096, or Uniden 296/396/796.

You need to buy a digital capable scanner, like the Uniden BC285D/296D/785D/796D/396D or Radioshack Pro96/2096. I see your in the business, check my avatar out. :^)

I am also looking at getting a trunking scanner for myself, but haven't a clue what I should be looking at. I asked in another part of this forum but didn't get all the advice that I wanted. I'd like to scan the OPP, Niagara EMS, Hamilton PD/FD and Peel Regional PD. Do I need a digital scanner? Would the PRO-2055 do the trick perhasps??

Since what you want to listen to crosses all kinds of system and emission types your best bet would be a digital-capable scanner.

That includes the Uniden Bearcat BC-250D/296D/785D/796D/396T (and I suppose the new Bearcat BC-997T?), or the Radio Shack Pro-96/2096 (available only in the US).

The Pro-2055 you mention is an analog-only scanner. You wouldn't be able to easily hear OPP with it.

I say easily because there are ways around the digital issue, namely listening to the analog UHF link side of their vehicular repeaters. But that only works when you're within a few kilometres of a car.

There are also fixed "Beat" repeaters in some communities, so check the RR Database for these. Also, what's heard on the VRs is limited to the TG (or patched TGs) that are in use at the time.

For future consideration: some early digital scanners (BC250/785) may be available used at good prices, but they can't handle newer "pure" 9600bps Motorola systems. I believe all the others listed do.

Thanks for the compliments, it is a 2003 International with a 24' NRC and 12000lbs OB winch. 75% of my work is moving 20' C-Cans for rental companies but I do tow when things are slow or the weather is bad. Equipment in the truck includes a Uniden BCT-8, Yaesu FT-8100 and a Grote X-Box that strobes my L.E.D. tail lights in an X pattern.

Nice Bed ve3nsv!!

I too am in the same industry, well kind of...

Worked for Hansen's in Brampton for almost 10 years, for the past 2 years I have worked for Avis Rent a Car in Toronto (a much better deal for sure), so I am "not for hire" now.

Our Flatbed & One Ton are lettered "Cendant Car Rental Group" with the "Avis" and "Budget" logo below that. Just before I started with Avis, the Cendant Corporation acquired Avis and Budget, all the locations in the USA started sharing their fleet right away, followed by the Provinces, now just last week we took over the Toronto Budget locations!

Anyhoo, my Flatbed is a 2003 GMC C-6500 with a 21' Jerr Dan aluminum deck, it has all the bells and whistles (as it should since I picked it out myself). I have always had a CB Radio in the truck, which comes in really handy anywhere I go. I recently decided that I wanted to listen to the O.P.P. again (and not just their media channels), so I picked up the BCD396T Scanner via the USA (so I saved $400.00).

I am also a Volunteer with Respond Emergency www.respondemergency.com.

Tow Driver as for your local PD, being Smiths Falls Police. They are garbled because they are using a voice-over bed called speech inversion, and is pretty simple to unscramble. Pvt message me for details.
