I have nothing but problems from day one of receiving my GRE 500 for Christmas last year.
IF my wife had not given it to me for a gift it would be on Ebay and may yet.

The antenna that came with it is verrrrrrrrrry loose. I have used an antenna from one of my Radio Shack scanners....and it works a little better.
My radio shack scanner works twices as good and my Unidens [even my 10 year old one] receives better than the expensive GRE 500. The tech support people are "nice" but they don't have a clue with what is wrong with it.

Before any of you ask, yes I have other scanners---19 to be exact. I have been scanning for 30 years...and working as a crime reporter for five area newspapers and stringing for two Nashville TV stations and a Huntsville Alabama station I need the best.

My question is has anyone else had problems with the antenna on the GRE 500 not working good?

I scan conventional UHF/VHF channels and a couple of 800 band channels.

The antenna connection to the PC board has probably come loose. Have you had it serviced?

BTW, GRE makes most of the RS scanners. The Pro-106 is a PSR-500 clone.

Well, I have heard that the GRE BNC has some issues, namely the lugs getting worn down from antenna swapping. I use commercial 800 antennas on mine (Antennex/Larsen) for better gain, professional look(covered BNC-looks like a commercial SMA antenna) and tighter fit. I immediately got better performance reception wise and fit wise after getting the commercial duckies. In fact, I don't even know where to stock duck is, as it's trash after I tried the pro antennas.

My 500 is excellent on VHF and absolutely killer on 800. And for digital, trunked or conventional, it can't be beat. That being said, I did expect more from it on UHF. The large metro area just south of me (Houston, UHF) has always been easy for me to RX on anything (full quieting on an HT1000) but I get nil on the 500.

I would suggest checking out the Antennex site for their duckies, and zero in on one or two favorite bands, as that worked miracles for me, and no more loose fit to boot.

If you do a quick search in the GRE forum, you'll find some info on a common problem with the antenna jack and a loose connection, that may well be the issue.
