• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Ok I’ve got one for you all -

where do you put your portable while in the car ( if it’s not on your belt ) ? I’ve been clipping mine on my visor for years but it always ends up coming loose and flying off into the backseat somewhere. A cup holder is out because if I happen to leave it in the car someone will see it and rip it off.
I have a cup holder in the door that fits my radio perfectly but I’m afraid when I shut the door the force of the door will mess up the radio.

So where do you guys put your portable while in the car ?

There are cup holders made for that purpose. I use one for the control head of my FT-90R. Home Depot has one on sale for cell phones that should hold most scanners.

I bought the "cup holder" from Walmart that was advertised on TV for $19.99. I have had no problems with it. I have another one from Walmart that fits in your cars cd player.

I use two of these. One to hold two radio control heads and another to hold a handheld scanner. Everything stays in place even off road. The only time it came off was when I was at a dead stop and hit from behind at 40 MPH. Avoid the latter and you should be good.

For the handheld, I use the single slot mount in the photo with that flexible arm. I simply use the belt clip of the radio and slip it between, so it does not slide off either side. They make different lengths of the flexible arm.

I secure the passenger side seat belt on long trips and attach my portable radio and phone case using the belt clips.

There are no good places for stowing things in modern cars, The manufacturers are going nuts over slots for smartphones, USB jacks and cup holders, but really anything other than that there is no space.

Also floor/hump mounted gear shifts are a waste of space unless there is a 1967 Ford GT40 attached to it.
