• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I keep mine clipped to the back of my seat, in the map holder (or whatever it was intended to hold). I also have mobiles in both my personal and work vehicles so no need for it to be on (I only carry my work portable when going to work, or personal portable when doing non-work related activities). I have a generic Pelican like case when transporting multiple portables.

I put a portable on my roof back in the 90's...it fell off when I drove off and was run over by a few cars...I do not recommend that location for mobile scanning...the signal was stong though.

Check here...they make cell phone type mounts that basically have a Motorola belt clip slot in them...I use these with radios, scanners, and even my cell phones belt clip holster.

I had my Kenwood clipped to my visor the other day and hit a pothole, that thing flew into the backseat and slightly bent the antenna, I usually keep it in the cupholder but I needed to hear a distant county at that time.

Have you considered an external antenna?

APX4000, XTS1500, and sometimes a Realistic/Radio shack handheld scanner......like others have posted, clipped to the passenger seat seatbelt, or in a slot made for cell phone or iPod. Some cars with iPod/cell phone slots fit perfectly for handheld radios. One of my cars has a nice and tight area for this near the left lower dash, and the antenna is even out of the way too. Make sure it is secure, I have also seen many injuries from radio equipment, weapons, magazines, and other loose items being problem.

Some die hard "radio whackers" should wear a helmet when in their vehicles, as they leave things loose, or trust Velcro for their mounts.

where do you put your portable while in the car ( if it’s not on your belt ) ? A cup holder is out because if I happen to leave it in the car someone will see it and rip it off.

Depends on where your cupholder is, I suppose; I use the cupholder between the front seats--for the most part the seats block the view of the scanner. As added security I'll throw a folded map, gloves, or some such over the top of the radio.

When combined with an amplifier under the seat, the hand-held / amp combination also makes for a good ham set-up--at least as far as keeping things hidden (it's less obvious than a mobile radio mounted under the dash).

Be careful with unsecured objects inside your vehicle. In a severe collision they can become deadly missiles capable of killing you if they hit you in the head. My father knew a man killed by a quart of oil in this manner.

^^^^^What he said^^^^^

On a related note, I just bought some Syntor X9000 mounting trays. In a previous life these mounting trays held those 30 LB radios and were VELCRO-ed to the vehicle.
