NORFOLK

Police are shutting down part of St. Paul’s Boulevard near Interstate 264 after bomb-sniffing dogs alerted on a vehicle in a municipal parking lot, fire officials said.

The road will be closed at Market Street and officials likely will close the ramp from I-264 that carries traffic to St. Paul’s near the Popeye’s, said Capt. Mike Marsala, fire spokesman. The road will be closed until the vehicle can be cleared.

Deputies have been searching and police have been using dogs to clear the municipal parking lot behind the McDonald’s and Popeye’s on St. Paul’s since this morning when a bomb threat was received by a clerk at Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Marsala said.

The court building has not been evacuated, he said. Officials are keeping people away from the parking lot.

The caller had mentioned a blue van during the threat, received at the courthouse about 9:30 a.m., said Paula Miller, spokeswoman for the Norfolk Sheriff's Office. Deputies searched all the court buildings this morning and checked outside the buildings but found nothing. The threat did not indicate a location for explosives. Nothing was found.

The judges decided not to evacuate the buildings, and business continued as usual, Miller said.

When the deputies did an initial search of the lot, they didn't find the blue van mentioned during the call, Miller said.

A dog being used to continue searching the lot into the afternoon had not found anything, Marsala said. A second dog was brought in and both alerted their handlers that something could be inside a vehicle near the Popeye's.

The restaurant was evacuated but the McDonald's wasn't, Marsala said. Some apartments nearby on Fenchurch Street also were not evacuated.

The Virginia State Police were called and bomb specialists were on the way shortly before 1 p.m.
