By the way... speaking of the DB for STARS, is there anyway we can begin adding what City/ County the sites are in? It's getting confusing, especially with the new sites coming on line.

No kidding! This would be nice. I know the answer would probably be NO, but what if the whole system was broken down by division. That way, if someone was driving through only part of VA, they would figure out which divisions they need and only add those sites and TGs.

Yeah that would be nice. I'm still waiting to see if they are going to put up a site on Warm Springs with everyone else's repeaters and for all I know it could already be there and I just don't know it. :)

Okay for site 221
The first license WPVE 520 is coming back Staunton Va to WV

The second WQMA 900 comes back to 7216 JINGLE ROCKS RD., ALLEGHANY COUNTY
COVINGTON, VA ALLEGHANY County 37-45-34.9 N, 080-06-02.0 W

So I guess that answers my own question :)

This license comes from the call sign id transmitted on Procom96

Licenses are coming back to voice channel 159.210 used to transmit the id info off site 221 control of 152.7125. I don't know if that affects the actual control channel site location or not for this one or the following post.

Site 222 is broadcasting 2 ids on it's site the first of which WQJW 344 is coming back as follows.

1 NORTH MOUNTAIN SCENIC DRIVE TOWER ROAD, GEORGE WASHINGTON NATIONAL FOREST
CLIFTON FORGE, VA ALLEGHANY County 37-49-13.2 N, 079-38-00.8 W

The second WQMK 676 is also coming back the same

1 NORTH MOUNTAIN SCENIC DRIVE TOWER ROAD, GEROGE WASHINGTON NATIONAL FORREST
CLIFTON FORGE, VA ALLEGHANY County 37-49-13.2 N, 079-38-00.8 W

I don't know if it makes any difference but these licenses are showing to the voice channels being used to transmit the call sign id info on. 159.120 and 159.4125 for the control channel of 161.850 on 222.

Take a look at the North Carolina VIPER system, Illinois StarCom21 system, and the Indiana SAFE-T system. They all did this with their sites as the systems grew in size. I think now would be a good time to implement such a thing.

Great idea.

Furthermore, someone should bring this up in the db forum and each site should have to have a corresponding county entered with it and then each system could have the number of counties tracked automatically based on site location(s) instead of someones opinion of coverage location.

161.925 Control Channel

I live just norh of Waynesboro and 161.925 is extremely strong. Although the listing shows this as Orange, I strongly suspect that it is located at the Bear Den sight. I am line of sight to Bear Den and I am receiving this signal at +50 db over S9. The sight is mostly transmitting TG 35, or VSP Division 3.

I would definitely vote for ID'ing sites by county rather than by VSP division.

Although there may be a divisional flow of info and signal within the system, there are obvious contraditions in terms of channel usage. Each VSP division appears to make heavy use of repeaters from its bordering divisions, and some other agencies have things set up according to their own administrative geography. I've been working on GPS data for VIPER and WVIRP and really like working with counties.

I've added the county to all the sites that had some location information. Any corrections, feel free to submit them.

Thanks,
Dave

I pick that site up very good from west of Bridgewater... I wondered how the signal could come from Orange as well. I have heard of Bear Den but don't know where it is. It that in the Afton area east of Dooms?

I've doubted the 2-005 site was in Orange too because I went right past there on Rt15 a few times and the signal was practically non-existent. In fact there wasn't any strong control channel in that area.

Bear Den Mountain is at 38-03-59.6 N, 078-47-55.2 W. About 5miles east of Waynesboro.
That's where WQHN250, WPMQ781, WQBY588, WPMS784 and WPMP769 are located.

Hey Todd, Bearden is north of Afton/I-64. The access road is 3.6 miles north of the entrance station on the drive. You can see some of the towers very well from around that first overlook going north. It is also visible directly in front of you as you pass the Crozet exit on 64 westbound, there are several towers there along the ridgeline. I take care of a cell site we share with VSP but the STARS stuff is in a brand new building.

Try the ham repeater on 147.075 or 444.775, the latter is linked to another VHF repeater in Highland county.

@n3glz: What site ID is the CC broadcasting?

Listening to 161.925 handheld here in C'ville shows SID 019Eh-0205. I agree, however, that it is too strong here for it to be Orange. Now that it is in the scanner, I will listen some in my travels.

So far, only 5 minutes or so, TG 35 just came up with voice.

This is getting complicated, I'll be glad when it is all done and operational.

Thanks for the info. I "think" I used to hunt some there (with permission- just to clarify;)) when I was a kid w/ my dad. There was a site that had VSP and VEPCO repeaters that bordered the Park- or the Parkway??? Had to be very careful not to cross the pines if I remember correctly. And we could see I-64 from the mountain... I still look up in that direction when I am on 64 and passing.

Yep, that's it. Still has Dominion Power, VSP, an old AT&T tower, and public radio FM. Farther out is a wood pole belonging to ex-Adelphia now Comcast (not sure how much is used anymore), a tower belonging to WHSV where 147.075 is, and the FM 99.7 tower with 444.775 and some commercial stuff.

The land around the VSP tower was donated to the Park by the family that owned it a few years ago, and the AT goes right past the towers. I've seen rattle snakes up there in the summer, one was right in the road!

Anyway, hearing STARS traffic from that site and have heard affiliations from RIC and NoVA too. They're gonna need more channels up there even though Appo isn't all that busy.

So Bear Den is confirmed as site 205?
