Another thing to consider is the fact that those old HF rigs are just that, HF only, they do not include 6 meters. Having a technician license gives you full access to this amazing band which is both surprising in it’s openings and performance as well as being so convenient to build various types of antennas for. I have been using this band for experimenting with a number of designs lately and I have also been rewarded with some nice openings in the past few weeks. I didn’t have this band on my FT-757gx 30+ years ago and now I know what I was missing.

Yeah, I plan on going General anyway since I know there's a lot more activity on 20m (I heard what sounded like a contest yesterday on 14.266 and what sounded like a couple guys in Texas on 14.208) when I took the rig with me out of town. I just wanted to make a few contacts and get used to working the band(s) before stepping up to General or anything.

Get the Gen and then when you hear something that sounds like you might want to work you can go for it. 10m is hit and miss .

I'm going to necro this thread because I caught the dots from 22-30MHz. I do have the RF board out and plan on disassembling VCO1 and clean the glue and scuzz off of it.

Has anyone found modern replacements for any of the transistors in there? It would be nice to replace any that aren't reading right while I'm in there.
