Post article notes scanner use by street racers

Article on the front page of todays Washington Post
mentions that scanners are used by illegal street
racers to evade police. Not exactly the best image of
our hobby to have publicized:

"Equipped with a police scanner, the racers could
learn when officers were on the way, spread the word
via cell phone and then scramble to another racing
spot. "

"And organized racers have become harder to catch,
with spectators monitoring police radios and spotters
posted down the road watching for patrol cars."

If I remember correctly, some scanner listeners gave a few examples, and most law enforcement and fire professionals here disagreed.

Well if the police know the drag racers are using police scanners, then why would they keep tipping them off they are on the way. Most jurisdictions have some form of in car computer and use those for 90% of our communications anyway. For those that don't there must be another way to communicate. I dunno......but with 800mhz it's hard for even us scanner buff's to keep up much less a bunch drag racing kids.....
