I noticed that unless I have an S-2.5 signal or more the GRE will not decode audio. On my trip to DE and back I had much broken audio because of that. I also had more encryption, especially around DC. I hope the next line of GRE scanners have much better P25 decode on weak signals.

So I got some new stuff and some strange stuff going up I95. On the trip up I scanned my best "all round" scan lineup and left the channels open with CSQ and code search. I was amazed at the number of cars that emmited RF noise on many of my scanner channels. Sometimes this noise would be riding along for miles (and driving me nuts). On the way back I scanned all closed with PL and P25 search. Since I did not much new PL stuff I prefered to keep the scanner locking on legit signals. Here are my condensed notes:

Common freqs like CPB, analog INS/BP (in FL), BATFE, USSS, and TSA were heard throughout the trip, so no need to point those out. USSS Washington, DC area was busy 24x7 on all the known common channels.

170.4125 PL 199.5 Ft. Pierce, FL (must be a bogus image)
410.1625 NAC 080 Vero Beach, FL (LE12/18, but KSC has a trunked system on it...heard for many miles)

163.0500 PL 100.0 NE FL (USCG NET 12 analog with PL)
164.9250 NAC 067 Darien, GA area (Could be an image, but I heard this all through GA and at home during tropo. I heard a mix of traffic like it was trunked, and heard Charlie 100 a few times as well.)

167.2875 NAC 167 Savannah, GA (FBI)

Those are the high points of what I recorded. Very little going on in NC, SC, and parts of GA. That trunked (image?) traffic that I heard on fed channels is a mystery. Perhaps someone who lives in the area can give me the skinny.

Did you get anything on the 168.7625 frequency? I'll have to keep an eye on 172.9. Interesting that they are using more than 1 NAC. I guess I'll have to start searching 400MHz more often, seems like it's more active.

They normally use multiple NAC codes depending on their setup.

From the wiki:
Transportation Security Administration

Ch 5 172.9000 NAC 002 S2 Simplex 2
Ch 7 172.9000 NAC 001 R1 Repeater 1
Ch 8 172.9000 NAC 002 R1 Repeater 2
Ch 9 172.9000 NAC 003 R1 Repeater 3
Ch 10 172.9000 NAC 001 S2 Simplex 1
Ch 11 172.9000 NAC 003 S2 Simplex 3

Thanks for the info. Maybe one of these days, I'll have to go up by the airport and take a listen. That means that the DB surely isn't accurate.

Roger that, all ~

No, sorry trainman111. I have to admit that this was limited by my scan list. I forgot to put that in. I had CB 19 with attenuation going for a while but locked it out due to all the useless chit chat. I did have to listen to it when the traffic came to a complete stop, TWICE. I wanted to know what different PL tones or P25 was on my usual 427 channels. Some of my cahnnels are also suspect or reported channels for certain agencies. If I used my P25 search files I would have been limited to one band at a time, and there would be no PL detection, only P25. If I used a regular search, I would not have computer logging (can't figure out how to get Win500 to do logging on search ranges) and I would get a bunch of false noise, intermods, and junk. The drive required my full attention as the traffic was very bad on the way up. Lots of "log jams" as people driving 55 (or less) were clogging the left lanes...never heard of "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT". Sorry they took those signs down! Funny...in VA the right lane was often open until you came up on one or two slow pokes, then you had to fight to get over to the middle lane. It was a constant battle from left to right and back just to make some headway. What is the problem up there? The drive back was much better as traffic was lighter.

About that GA trunked traffic...I logged a bunch of trunked channels coming in on some band openings that match that NAC 067 code. These may be part of that system and can't be an image. Is GA and SC doing the IWN trunked thing? Here is what I have so far:

163.0125 (believed to be the control channel for this system as it came in when the traffic channels did)
162.0625
163.3125
164.1875
164.5375
164.9250

I wish I hit the search when I was up there. Looks like I need to do another road trip. ;)

Welcome to VA Phil! Traffic around Richmond is always horrible. It makes me wonder how come of these drivers got their licenses. It sure does sound like you need to make another road trip to me. I bet there's lots of things out there that no one else has found that you probably would :)

Yes, another trip...I think so! I love road trips, and VA was very nice other than the traffic. I like that I295 beltway around Richmond. I had to be somewhere by a time deadline, so I was not wanting to go very slow, but mybe a scanner trip with no time limit would be fun. I am wondering about that trunked fed stuff!

This is tempting. :)

New to P25

Hello all,
After having a Pro-2021 for over 20 yrs, it finally bit the dust last year and earlier this year I replaced it with a BCT-15. Would have liked to get a digital scanner but funds just wouldn't allow it. So do you need a dig scanner to scan the way you pro's are doing it? What is the NAC code that I see posted quite a bit here? I have the old analog style freq's galore for gov't but if they converted to digital I just may have to save my pennies for a digital scanner.....any help? suggestions?

Thanks all
KC

Hi kc8flq, and welcome. Where are you at? Many agencies have gone digital or will be soon. You will not hear much in the near future on analog. USSS, IRS, ATF, TSA, USMS, USCG, DSS, USPS, and maybe more I am forgetting are all digital nationwide now. No analog to speak of. Others like FBI (half and half in most areas), USC (CBP), INS, BP, ICE, DEA, NPS, USFS, VA, FPS etc are in the transision in parts of the country. Some areas have gone full P25 digital on one or more of these agencies. Many state systems are digital, and even some local agencies now. My local college security even went P25 digital! This is the time to upgrade or get left out.

The NAC people talk about is the Network Access Code. It is a PL (CTCSS) or DPL (DCS) for the digital P25 world. We are all searching these out and taking notes on who uses what, and where. It helps to identify who you are picking up. Many digital coms are encrypted  and you can't tell who it is unless you read a well know NAC code. NAC codes can be read even when encrypted (unlike analog DES encryption), so you can get a good idea of who you are hearing on a frequency even though you can't hear what they are saying. It is a new world, and I think more fun for searchers as things change.

I got 170.075 with 225.7 pl today at home, real clear either direct channel (car to car) or input side of a repeater.

FBI with a NAC of 330, input is 164.0125. Linked together with 167.5125 and 167.5625. The radio techs have been testing the system for the past couple of days.
