• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just bought a remote head radio. I don't have enough wire to go directly to the battery. I have a 2004 ford explorer. Where is a safe quick easy place to to hook up my power wire. Not sure where I can splice into to get power for it. I will put it under the seat. I have about 3 feet of wire. I am no mechanic. I would appericate any help thanks.

Go to Radio Shack and get yourself some more heavy duty wire along with some butt connectors to run it to your battery. If you look under the dash (or anywhere else), you will see most of the wiring is low amperage. You don't want to fry your Exploder by a cheesy tap.

Mike hit the nail on the head. I don't know how many times in the years that I've been doing installing that I've seen either radios, vehicles, or a combination of both that were burned up because of inappropriate wiring. I promise that you don't have to be a mechanic to run power out to the engine compartment. Especially on a 2004 Explorer. I had one.

If you look behind the dash on the drivers side, above & slightly to the left of the steering column / linkage there is a gromet with more than enough room to run through. All you have to do is cut a small slit & there ya go. Not trying to nit pick ya, just trying to save some heartache down the line.

I have same vehicle, What I did was run I think about 4 gauge wire to battery, with a fuse at the battery. This runs through firewall, underdash, center console to under 2nd row seating, but you could do under passenger seat. Look online for a power distribution box with blade fuses for each feed you want, this box comes to be closed and safe. Then power your radio from there. Wire will be big enough you can also attach an inverter to same line. I also added a spare 12 v accessory plug too for whatever.. Plus I ran with some smaller wire another 12 v. accesory plug to the rear area, just behind 3rd row seating, which I use for emergency lighting, or you can plug a 12v fridge in or whatever.
