Is it really necessary to delete or lock out the pre programmed systems that are installed on the 396t to improve scanner performance, other than just to free up memory? Will removing all of these systems not needed really make the unit scan faster, receive better, etc?

I erased all the pre-programmed stuff from my '396's. It just frees up memory. If you have the space needed to program the systems you want, you can just leave the pre-programmed stuff in. But I figured I will probably never visit most of the places that are pre-programmed into the radio, so why keep them? If you want, you can always get these files on-line and load them back if you ever need them.

I erased mine. Radio freqs and ID are always being updated. Whatever came preprogramed is likely out of date. Just look at all the new postings in the RR database. About once a week I go back and check to see if there have been and changes to the systems I normally monitor.

You don't really need to get them online if you don't want to though.

You may or may not be aware of this fact, but they can be very easily restored by doing a full system Reset since they are part of the internal code of the scanner.

The following key combinations, when powering up, will get you there:

2+3+L/O
2+9+L/O
2+9+Hold <--------- this one is documented in the user's manual
3+8+L/O
8+9+Hold

Lots of users seem to be afraid of losing their Pre-Loads, this is surely not the case.

FWIW,

I erased all of my preloaded systems. The scanner comes from the factory with 66% of it's memory used up on places that I'll never visit!! I know uniden was trying to wow the user with how much stuff the scanner can hold, but it was waste of memory in my opinion. KICK BUTT SCANNER THOUGH!!!
