I have a good friend who is returning to Missouri after many years away. He's very new to the hobby. My question is, besides forking out the money for a P25 P2 scanner, are there any lower priced units that receive anything as far as public safety? From what I see here on RR, looks like pretty much all the public safety stuff is going to be on MOSWIN. Thanks in advance for any input.

really depends on the area your friend is moving to and what they're wanting to listen to. where I'm at, it's a mix of analog, P25 non-trunked, and MOSWIN. The SDS line are good for the simulcast sites but I also have a 996P2 which does the job quite nicely too

Thanks for your response. I meant to state where is going but apparently had a "senior moment". He's moving to Texas County, somewhere pretty close to Houston.

looking at that area does appear to be a mix of analog and P25 phase 2. that being said.. handheld or base units with that capability would be pretty pricey ($400-$700 new without the DMR or NXDN upgrades).

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Guess I'll have to see if wants to drop that amount of money during/ after a cross-county move. Thanks. BTW, I bought an SDS100 several months ago & honestly I can't say I'm thrilled with it. And, I paid for the DMR & NXDN upgrades. I'm starting to think I should find another hobby after 50+ years. Thanks again.

I've got the 100 & 200, 436 & 536 and they all do well for me but I also remember going to radio shack for frequency crystals and the good ol Police Call book every year lol
Crystals, no kiddin'! I probably spent $200 on crystals back in the day & of course the annual Police Call. To make matters worse, there was a really cool independent radio shop in California, MO (wish I could remember the guy's name that owned it). He always had the latest scanners, etc. & would offer a decent trade-in towards the new stuff. Jeez, I'm old.

What problems are you having with the SDS 100?

Really my main issue with the SDS 100 is the fact that I can't drop in some AA batteries if needed & I'm not real enthused with the keypad.The. audio completely sucks. My local PD has switched to some funky new DMR system (so I was told by a long time radio tech who previously serviced that agency for years) which I can't get figured out yet. And I have family in SF but they changed things up when they went Phase II so all I can hear is the Dispatch side due to encryption for mobiles & HTs. That's not all exactly an issue with the scanner of course. Just wish I hadn't dropped $1100 + for no more than I'm getting out of it.

What County or PD Agency is supposedly using DMR in your area ke6ats?

As far as your Friend moving to Texas County Missouri the Uniden BCD299P2 should work for a base/mobile scanner. The database shows Texas County uses MOWSIN and analog VHF High Band.

Visalia PD & Tulare County Sheriff. Both agencies are still analog for day to day stuff, but have the capability for DMR (so I'm told). TCSO now dispatches for some smaller PDs in the county but it's unclear if those agencies are DMR on their previous analog freqs. Their licenses are still valid but I have not heard any traffic on those freqs. in at least 5 years.

I looked at the RR data base for Tulare County California and Visalia PD and they are licensed for analog and P25. Neither Agency FCC show a license for DMR unless this is a recent change where FCC hasn’t updated the web site.

I agree with VASCAR2. A 996P2 would be a great choice. Definitely get the DMR and NXDN updates. I scan, off and on, from the Laclede/Dallas County line and can receive Texas Co about 70% of the time with an outside antenna. Many surrounding counties to my area down that way have switched to DMR and NXDN. Most of the MOSWIN sites are VHF with a bunch of 700/800 in the mix. Good luck.

I used to go there to buy crystals and numerous electronic parts! (y)

Before shelling out the money for a P25 Phase 2 scanner they could just download the Broadcastify app to their phone. If they enjoy listening to it enough to justify the +$500 expense then go for it. The Uniden SDS100 would be a great option.
