I apologize for the volley of i am sure, extremely simple questions, but here goes another, i am about to pick up the BC796D in about an hour and i was reading through the online manual for it and i noticed it comes with 10 or 12 preset searching freq ranges, i noticed that it mentioned that these freq. ranges are the standard in most places in the U.S.....i was wondering if anyone knows if this standardization carries over into Canada....so say for instance the "public saftey" ranges (police, ems, fire and so on) would searching this range for active freq. still be a suitable method of finding new active channels? Or does Canada use a whole different range?

Thanks again everyone :D

Searching is good, but nowadays, is inefficient with freq. finding radios, such as the BC 246T.
I see that you are going to pick up a "796" , perhaps you can ask for a
demo of the signal stalking feature of the 246.

Those pre-set search bands you were enquiring about, in the US some of the Emerg Serv.'s are low band VHF, that's not really used here anymore.

Also, other U.S. Emerg freq's occupy part of the UHF -TV range, so your scanner will lock into TV signals that are active in that range.
VHF- HI and 800, 900 should offer good searching though.

Aircraft, Railroad, Marine should be standard in both countries.

I like using the Marine preset search band as it will alternately display the freq, then flash the service channel.
{Example 156.8000 for a couple of seconds, then 16 (corresponding Maritime channel) back and forth until communication ceases.}

Enjoy your radio, check out the search ranges, and report anything interesting here.

Welcome to the site. :)
