I went and seen the president's Motor Cage. Security everywhere. State Police, Sherriff, and local Police communications all quiet. They must have switched to enrypted channels.
President in Town today all Police communications quiet.

I hope they aren't all using cell phones. Commercial for-profit infrastructure for mission critical communications. Sounds like a bad idea to me.

You won't get any argument from me about using encryption in this case. He spent about 20 minutes talking about Social Security Reform and then left.

There's seldom a scanner fan's dream day as great as when the President is in town. Milwaukee had the privledge of hosting him last Wednesday and for once, I heard about it before he had left.
Normal Milw police channnels (460.xxx) were no different from usual. Both number of calls and types of traffic were the same as usual as far as I could tell. The special events channel (F5) was restricted to Pres detail but traffic was light and dull.
The good stuff was on the Federal bands. Both UHF and VHF had activity on frequencies I've never heard before. There was some Astro, some 'analog' secure (Mot Securenet), and some unencrypted channels in use. Themost active clear channel was what I had listed as FBI and seemed to be the running of plates and, well, pretty dull stuff. Astro, which sounds distinctly like a diesel truck engine, was limited to Secret Service Charlie channel, their primary. The DES traffic was heard on several channels.
Note that this was scanning channels I already had in the 246T's memory. I didn't search for new channels and I can't help but wonder what I was missing. Such is scannist's remorse.

Bush was here in Springfield, IL just over a month ago for the Presidential Library and Museum opening. All city police traffic for the detail was on channel 5, kind of went through withdrawals for a few days afterwards when it got so quiet :wink:. For the days of the dedication events it was steady traffic all day and night. Some traffic for the events was on the rarely used City Ops channels. Also, the shiek from Qatar was here a few weeks ago, similar setup. When I start hearing City Ops traffic I know there is something important, or else it's interagency training which is easily identified.
