Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I thought I read somewhere that the Price Industries MRK-2 ribless cables can program but not flash the various portables - but the Price website seems to suggest they can both program and flash.

Whats the story here - are there any Price MRK-2 users here than can confirm the ribless cable will indeed 'flash' if required?

I use an RS-232 ribless from Price and have not had trouble flashing any 256k ROM 8 or 512k MRK radios.

No ribless, not Price or Macom will flash an LPE with flash code before P1R09C00, Jag 700p KRD models S1R02A05 and before, or P7100/Jag 700p RU model with flash code before J2R06A02. This is because the older flash codes wouln't turn on the switched B+ to the UDC which powers the rib cable.

Thanks JungleJim. Just out of interest, I guess the solution to getting early firmware variants of the portables you'd listed to 'flash' with a RIBless unit is to inject your own +B to the circuitry? Probably wouldn't be a hard mod to do to the RIBless device concerned.

I don't know about that, we just drag out the RIB and wall power supply. I have been able to do the flash upgrade with a ribless cable by using the "recovery" tool in radio maintenance. I don't recommend it as it doesn't always work and if you're not comfortable with it you may put yourself further behind
