I was looking to get another Phase 2 scanner to use for streaming. The memory aspect is not important, as it will only be scanning 1 or 2 systems. The question is, how is the audio between the 996P2 and the 536HP? I have a 536HP already, and even with the firmware update the external speaker out audio is absolutely horrible. It sounds like they are talking through a wool sock. I was kind of hoping the 996P2 would at least give me better audio out of the speaker jack. Thoughts?

I have both scanners, although there is no Phase 2 system around here. I kind of prefer the 996p2 over the 536HP for the sound aspect. There are other reasons for my preference but that wasn't the question. I do like the 536HP for mobile when traveling to areas outside my normal commute.

Thanks for the heads up

HRO has another sale going on till the end of July on the 996p2 for $359. I too have IBS disorder and since I'm up in Atlanta visiting I just might have to pick one up.

Hey, thank you for mentioning this. I was able to call HRO and get them to credit the $20 difference from the $379 I paid on 6/30. So $359 for me with no tax, no shipping. They're good people to buy from.

Have both scanners also. Kind of like the sound from the speakers of the 996p2 better than the 536.

Sounds just like a 996xt, as you would expect. Do my phase 2 listening on the 996p2.

Had my 536 hooked up to an external speaker which sounded a little better, but now the screen is getting too dim to use..

This is all interesting, as the only real difference is the lack of writing to the SD card. Maybe that is taxing the CPU a little more and making the difference.

Let's not start on the darn SD card. I wish that the 536HP didn't have one. Nothing but problems with it. (the SD card that is)

All depends on who the sellers is on Amazon. Once the low priced ones are sold out the next one in line is displayed on the main page. I believe bearcat warehouse was the lowest price ones on Amazon.

I always tout the x36HPs as my best scanners from the standpoint of features and the true NFM filter, often important here in radio-dense LA. However, for general listening to most channels/TGs, when I want the best audio quality, I also agree that that the 996XT and now the newer 996P2 sound better.
Just purely from a listening perspective, I like the 996P2 better for long periods of listening.

Yet look at all the pre-x36 posts that whine about Uniden not having an SD card...

If Uniden (or Whistler) made a DC to Daylight scanner that decoded any form of encoding, was under $400, came with new tech batteries that lasted for days, and made cookies:

There would still be people who would complain it did not make cupcakes, cake, or bread and in endless threads post how "trivial" it would be to do.

Listen, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Yes, I complained about the Parallels/VMWare problem. I fixed it. Outside of that, I love my 436 and 536. The first SD card on the 536 was a bad card. No big deal, bought a 32 GB card that I have no fear of filling up. Same with my 436. Yes, I like my Pro668, but know what? I like the fact that the 436/536 uses GPS for scanning. I travel a lot, and i love not having to play with the scanner while driving.

A few years ago I was tracking a 32" Toshiba flat screen on Amazon. One week, $299. The next, $219. Another week goes by, and its $299. Well a few days later it drops again, to $219 and I whip out the credit card. And this was direct from Amazon, not a reseller or marketplace seller.

I get the impression Amazon is using pricing algorithms that us mere mortals can never hope to understand.

Its a lowest price algorithm. The one listed is always the lowest price. The other vendors are still there if you bring them up. When the low guy sells his, it reverts to the next lowest vendor, which was the $299 guy in your case.

I always pop the other vendors up and take a look. Sometimes one will be Amazon direct for a couple dollars more rather than going with the low guy I don't know. Amazon sold items add the best for experience and quality (not warehouse). Other times I find a vendor I had good experience with for the same or slightly higher price.

Its worth looking at the different vendors under an item rather than just going with the low guy unless I know the low guy.

I bought my BCD426HP for ~$480 compared to the original price of $600, both prices from Amazon direct!
I had to wait a week, constantly checking the price, for Amazon to price match some other seller who was also doing ~$470.

So if there's competition, you may see Amazon prices go down, a lot...!
