I have not had any of my print rub off. I've had the 396T for weeks now and use it daily. Are there others out there that have used it extensilvely and are not having problems? If it ever does wear off I imagine I would send it in for repair but as of yet I have not noticed anything coming off.

Is it the silver on the buttons that is supposedly coming off?

It is certainly great news that Uniden is offering to fix this issue for those having problems.

I've had my 396 just short of a month, with heavy use, and also show no signs of degradation as yet.

Some reported the silk screen print on the faceplace itself (like the TrunkTracker IV lettering) as being a problem, other posts I've read point to the keys themselves. So far, I see neither on my unit.

It does sound like those going in for repair are getting fairly fast turn around, so from what I've seen Uniden is making the effort to resolve the ones with problems.

I have yet to see a substantiated complaint about the keys. I just think some people are mis-stating the problem, and in fact it may be the print UNDER the keys (AKA the silkscreen).

Exactly! For some reason, some people think it's the keys. My keys are fine, but according to my case, I now own a "RunkTracker IV".

I will say that Uniden was quick to respond to my official query to them about it, and once I return to the states, will send mine in for the case replacement. While it is a minor irritant, it certainly is no reason for people not to buy one. This is one terrific scanner IMHO.

I've had mine since June 30th, and nothing is worn yet; keys, faceplate or otherwise.

Purchased through Who?

I wonder if the more important question may be for those of us who have not had print issues; who did we purchase through?
I'm wondering if certain distributors just got lucky with a certain production run?
I've had mine since end of June as well and have had no issues.
Purchased through Scanner Master.

Well I have had mine in hand since June 30th and programmed it quite a lot by hand (prior to the SW being available) and use it daily. Mine came from Scanners Unlimited and shows no sign of wear (yet).

I spoke too soon, my friends. I looked closely at the key symbol, the att under the lower right hand key and the T in Trunktracker and they are faded. CRAP!

Anyway, I sent my information and will wait on Unidens reply on the next step to take.

So, are the new faceplates "fade proof."

Or "run T" (no, mine is still fine - I just thought runt was cute)

Haven't heard of any issues with parts of Uniden wearing off. :p

Alright, I've got a question. I figure if I ask here, I can get an answer quicker and more informed than the Uniden Customer Service Waste of Time Line.

I sent my info to Uniden via email, and I recieved and printed out the shipping info. My question is, how much is the shipping insured for? I noticed a line that said "Declared Value- $100", so is this insurance, or something else? Because there's no way in hell I'm going to send my scanner to Fort Worth if it's not insured for the full value of the scanner.

I was just searching to see if anyone else had mentioned this before. I sent mine via email as well and it valued mine at 100 dollars. I am wondering whether or not i want to send mine off too. I cannot answer your question, but I am curious to know what the answer is.

I imagine it costs them more to value you the scanner any higher. I am assuming they are paying for the shipping. Isn't that why we were sent a label? I bet if there were problems, Uniden would replace it.

You have more faith in them than I do. I'd expect them to say, "Screw you, it isn't our problem. Talk to Fed-Ex."

But yes, they pay for shipping, but there's always the crook with a keen eye for a box addressed to or from Uniden, or the careless package handler, or the careless and repentless package handling machine.

The plus side is I have not read one thread that said that anyones radio got misplaced. The turnaround time seems to be fast as well. I will be a bit nervous the entire time though. I would feel much more comfortable with a $550 declared value.

I was just going to send it in to get a nice, new, fancy case without scratches. I don't really care about the print. They're providing free service, might as well take advantage of the opportunity.

Although I am a little pissed that I spend better than $500 for a scanner just to have the lettering rub off.

The $100 figure is Fedex default insurance coverage on packages. The computer services company I work for also uses Fedex as a carrier & we order computer & printer parts for both warranty & non-warranty repairs. Except for extremely high-dollar parts (several thousands of dollars), or for customer owned items like back-up tape drives that can only be serviced by returning to the manufacturer, we only use the carrier default insurance coverage. Their loss rate is very low, and in effect we're self insured. The extra cost of paying for additional insurance coverage on every item would be more than that of absorbing an occasional loss (much less than 1 a month out of thousands of individual shipments per week).

Uniden, I'm sure, is also self-insured. Since they picked the carrier, specified the method of shipment & insurance coverage, & supplied you with a link to print the label, they've taken responsibility for the transaction from the point you hand the box off to a Fedex representative. Uniden knows they have a problem to deal with on the silk screen, and they seem to be trying. They have too much to lose by getting into a blame game on shipping, so I have no doubt that if a scanner was lost or damaged, it would be replaced.

If this was a repair, other than silk screen, where the end user (instead of Uniden) was paying the freight back to Uniden, then in that case, for simple peace of mind, I'd be paying for full value declaration.

theres also another possiblity. uniden could be using another insurance carrier
that costs less than federal express.
