Dumb question.

I have heard some police officers in my area, say 'let's go to private'.

What does that mean exactly?
and is there anything that would allow me to listen to them legally?

Somebody told me it's a 'coded' frequency and there are descramblers you could get. He also told me they were legal.

Anybody know anything about this?

I would take it to mean they are using encryption when they refer to "private" since it's the police. If they are using a Motorola product such as the XTS or Saber models, you just move a rotary switch to change from clear to encrypted mode. It is illegal to intercept encrypted transmissions. However, I know some radios use a simple voice-inversion for a privacy mode, which in reality isn't true encryption, at least to my way of thinking. But, I don't know about the legalities of re-inverting the signal so you can copy it. I know there are plenty of voice inverters out there to be had. I really can't say if there are any public safety orgs using voice inversion though. Perhaps someone with more knowledge can weigh in on these points.

It might be another channel or talkaround, too. If your just using regular squelch, you'd be able to hear encryption as staticky hissing.

I'll have to play with the squelch next time.

They don't do it too often

Could be encryption.

Could be scrambling.

Could be a different frequency (within or outside the PS frequencies)

Could be Cellular.

Could be CB (remember, 'private' is a key word, not necessarily the truth).

The rest of the questions depend on what their term means. I've seen just about all of the above used for 'private' (except CB).

yeah I guess I'll never really find out then

if it were a diff. freq. It would be hard to find b/c of the infrequent use.

The officers around here say go to private and they go to what is actually national law 155.47500.

For a while a few of them actually thought it was a freq no one knew about. (big secret huh) They where talking about some guy they were after one of them had just seen him. They were cussing and carrying on about kicking his a**, then when they finally shut up, their supervisor came over the radio and said, "this is not a private channel, anyone can hear you over a scanner, 49 (meet) with me at xxxx location". Oh  !!! I thought that was hillarious!!

What county and State are you in?
Are you listening to a trunked system?

If so, most trunked radio's have a feature called "Private Call" or "Private" which allows the user to call a specific radio ID number. This feature is still trunked but is now deemed private between the 2 users. This is not the same as TA or Talk Around. Ocasionaly you can get bits and pieces of the conversation an open scanner meaning the scanner is not searching for trunk ID's but just following the freqs.

Descrambling or modifying a radio to trunk a Private call is illeagle. Yes there are products out there that do this but buyer beware! It comes with the same pennalties as hacking a satelite. But its now the LE taking you to court and not Direct TV... Usually LE always win in court.

It hard to beat the house playing there game!!! There odds are stacked against you from the get go. Your chances are better at winning the lottory!

Isn't what you're calling private call the same thing as Icall? Uniden scanners can be programmed to follow Icall, so I don't think it's illegal to listen to them.

Yes, a 'private call' is the same as an I-call, and NOT ILLEGAL to monitor.

Unfortunately, no scanner will track I-calls on P25 systems. Unidens will follow them on 3600 systems, though.

No trunked system here, and I'm not so sure they would spend the money on one either.
They are still using 150mhz frequencies.

Im not sure about the "I-Call".. Unless your talking about an EDAC System...and thats a different system from a Motorola Type 1 or 2 Smartnet. Which is what I am refering to. Now if theres a scanner that can trunk or follow the Private calls for a Motorola I'd like to see that. So far in Wichita, there none around here!

I'll look into the I-Call. I know a few HAMs in a town north of me who scan on the Johnson EDAC system.

Waynesville is the Town or the County? I need the County name to look up your Counties Listing either on this boared or FCC site.

I dont think your in Polk Co. or Jasper Co. So could you help me out here?

Also, You dont have to be on 800 MHz to be trunked! Look at Las Vegas with all of there systems. Now grant it I havent seen any VHF trunked system, But it dont mean it cant be done.

The Uniden 246T even shows the ID numbers of the radios in an I-call. I've confirmed it works on Moto 900mhz system.

I-calls exist on both Motorola and M/A-Com systems. As Grog stated, there are scanners that can track them. (also as I stated above)

Scanners cannot track them (yet) on 9600 Motorola systems for some reason, but that is the exception, not the rule.

This is absolutely true, but the problem is that the term "I-Call" is used by Uniden to cover both "I-Call" on EDACS systems and "Private Call" on Motorola Systems, although they do show up differently on the display. In any case Uniden's incorrect terminology has little to do with the fact that they can indeed monitor both types of direct radio-to-radio communications, no matter what they call it. :)

Radio ID numbers and the MPSCS

Using two radios the PRO-96 and a base PRO-2096, one linked for the data and the other for simultaneos audio ive tried to figure out what car numbers belong to what radio ID numbers.

Q: Is their a sequential numbering system in place for each radio ID?

Ex: I chesterfield, MI the all of chesterfields radio Id numbers start with 250 followed by their 4 digit number. Chesterfield is in the MSP district 2 and Macomb County is number 50. Is this a coincidence or is this the pattern for numbering on the MPSCS?
