I just upgraded my Pro-106 with 2.0 and it went well, fast, and I did it just to keep up to date w/ the upgrades as they roll em out from the Shack ! I've had this scanner 2 yrs now, love that they are giving us upgrades that actually work. Still love my 106 and I think it's the best scanner ever offered to the scanner enthusiast. Bravo Radio Shack !

I upgraded the 106 and 197 today; the 106 was @ 1.9, and the 197 was @ 1.7. Both worked well before the upgrade, and work equally well afterward.

Wirelessly posted (indulge: Opera/9.80 (X11; Linux zbov; U; en) Presto/2.9.201 Version/11.50)

if you update a pro-106

and clone to a pro-197

Will the clone update the firmware?

The PDF that comes in the zip says it fixes marine, VHF and UHF search frequencies.

I see only the executable for the 2000106_0197_V20.exe, no zipped file, and no PDF. Unless your talking about the GRE PSR-500 update.

Looks like they plan to leave people blind on this update, as far as what was updated this time around for the Pro-106/197.

When I tried to upgrade to firmware 2.0 and tell it to run the file, I got a message that said that file is normally not downloaded and may cause harm to my computer. I have a new desktop running Windows 7.
Do I just ignore the message and run the file anyway ? Anyone else get this message ?

Thanks.

Yes, it's from Norton IIRC - Just ignore the message.

Or if the message is from Windows User Account Control it's just making sure you launched the program and are aware of it. Win 7 is much more cautious in that regard compared to WinXP.

upgrade went okay to 2.0. seems to hit the right frequency in vhf and uhf whereas before it seemed to be a few steps off quite often. still learning about the receiver.....

Upgrades?

I find it interesting that the firmware update was released but there is no documentation with it to tell you what was changed.

If you have a lower firmware than 1.9 it doesn't matter. Just use the latest firmware update.

I have a recently purchased Pro-106, (Serial # 043138)

Holding the PGM button and truning on reveals:

uP App Ver: RF1.9

My older 106, (Serial Number 001139) displays the following for the same command:

uP App Ver: RU1.9

So is it correct that the RU1.9 stands for an upgrade on the old radio, and the RF1.9 means that the new radio shipped with the latest firmware, notwithstanding that RF2.0 is now being relrased?

Interesting, I'd say that's an unknown. You could try the update to see what the updater tells you when you attempt it. Then you can always disregard the update if you like.

I was informed by a communication with GRE service people a while back that the "U" = User upgraded, and the "F" = factory supplied firmware. The "R" = Radio Shack firmware version whereas the GRE equivalent PSR500 would not have the "R" in the version number.

EDIT---- To clarify... They also told me that the "U" and "F" firmware is identical, it's just identified as to where it came from.

2.0 PDF on site

I changed the url from the 1.9 docs on Radio Shack's website to 2.0 and I got an updated 2.0 PDF:

https://www.radioshack.com/graphics/uc/rsk/Support/ProductManuals/2000106_0197_V20.pdf

Changes in 2.0:

• Pressing the ATT key during scanning while on a CONV object causes the object
to be stored to EEPROM immediately. This eliminates the possibility of the ATT
status change being lost due to a Priority check.
• Changed 154-156MHz range to accommodate Marine channels
• Added duplicate checking to conventional channels created via PGM NEW CONV

It looks to me like Radio Shack is staying a version behind the GRE models. Also note the 2.0 PDF is dated from June 2011. So they sat on this one for a while. The above changes also match the PSR-500/600 2.0 firmware changes.

Looking at the changes in the new PSR-500/600 GRE 2.1 firmware:

• Fixed Marine, VHF, and UHF search frequencies

It doesn't look like these fixes are in the 2.0 firmware just released for the Radio Shack version. Given the 2.1 fix above, I assume there are "Marine, VHF, and UHF search frequencies" issues with this "new" 2.0 version.

I suppose when/if GRE releases a version 2.2 firmware, Radio Shack may provide us the 2.1 firmware (which they may already have received from GRE).

I wish Radio Shack wouldn't sit on firmware revisions that fix bugs.

Scanner 106 problem

I purchased a Radio Shack scanner and the store programmed the frequencies for me. Someone else had purchased the same scanner and had the scanner programmed before I bought mine. His scanner worked great until about a week before Christmas, then he started missing stations. I bought mine just before christmas and I have not been able to get reception on my scanner.
I am in a area that has digital 800 Mhz system, the state of Kansas came in before christmas and updated their 800 mhz tower frequencies due to refarming. In talking to our radio specialist this should not have affected our scanners. We also use simulcast on the 800 Mhz towers in our county.
If I go out of our county to the surrounding counties, the scanner seems to work pretty good. Not sure what is going on. I have taken the scanner back to the store three times and still can't get it to work well. Any ideas.
