Hey guys, been lurking for a while, finally made an account. I always wondered what made the two battery holders different, what prevented the black holder from being charged. I probed them with my multimeter, carefully inspected the physical dimensions, but I couldn't find any mechanism that would disallow charging. I did some searching on here, and someone mentioned the black holder only has two nubs, the third nub on the yellow holder is the charging pin. Found a picture of a black holder, and sure enough, something is off. Well that explains why I was so confused, I have a black holder that has three nubs, ie. its identical to the yellow holder except in color. Thought that was a little odd. Kinda wondering what to do about that, its been a while since I bought it, so I'm not sure RS would do anything. I rarely use alkaline batteries, usually only when I'm somewhere without my MAHA charger, so its not a big deal that it has the pin. Then again, it would be nice to have the holder without a 3rd pin so I can leave it plugged in without worry of it charging when off (charge timer set to 0).

The black holder must have been yellow in an earlier life, it should only have the two right most bumps. It's the absence of the left most bump that keeps it from charging. Although you really should never charge batteries while they are in the radio. I only use my mobile power cable when all my batteries are exhausted, which is rare. I carry two sets of batteries, besides the set in the radio.

I charge the batteries externally in a Maha MH-C801.
