I'm new to the hobby and purchased the 106 almost a month ago - I just might be hooked! Firmware upgraded to CPU 1.8 and DSP 1.4.

I searched both the Radio Shack and the GRE forums and didn't find any similar questions.

I spend the majority of my listening on conventional objects. Typically only 21 frequencies spread over three scan lists. Most often, the scanner is so fast that I cannot read the tags as it is scanning. Occasionally, it scans slow enough that I can read the tags clearly, perhaps 1-2 seconds per freq. and I'm missing some broadcasts - particularly if I happen to be scanning lots of frequencies.

There are several things that I can do to bring it back up to speed, but none of them work every time. For instance, a simple power down/power up will work sometimes. Sometimes turning on one or more additional scan lists works, even when turning them back off. Sometimes just listening to WX for a few seconds does it. Other times listening to a SRCH does it. I don't recall whether I've tried reloading from a V folder.

It does not appear to be related to squelch settings. It shouldn't be a power issue, as I've seen this happen with drained batteries, fresh batteries, yellow and black holder, alkaline, rechargeables, and using the AC adapter. (Recharge is always disabled.)

Have any of you seen this symptom? Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing it, or better yet, how to prevent it? Any method that will consistently bring back the fast scanning when this happens?

Just make sure your priority, as well as your attenuator are off. Other than that, I can't advise you. This is a new one to me.

Hmm me to. That would of been my first question about the squelch. Are you getting a good signal? If it is scanning so fast as where you can't read the tags, try moving the scanner to a different location and find the strongest signal you can get. Which County are you scanning? Is it Okaloosa

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Try raising the squelch a little.

What my head is thinking it is (although it may be wrong)

Since you are scanning conventional frequencies, are you using a CTCSS (or PL) tone? If so, as yo move around, your conventional frequencies may experience RF noise from nearby computers and electronics. Since the noise is there, your scanner will stop on the frequency and look for the PL tone to open the squelch. It will not find the PL tone which is why you will not hear anything, but it still can slow the scan speed.

Considerably raising the squelch may help. Or moving from any areas of RF noise.

The same thing can happen if other stations are transmitting on those channels with a different PL, or no PL.
