I've been having a problem with my scanner "missing" transmissions on the 2 Motorola Trunked Digital Systems I listen to. What it does is I will see a channel light up on the display, but no audio will come through. It's an off and on issue. Il see it light up, no audio comes through, then I see the channel unkey and key back up and it's clear as a bell. I'm wondering if there are some settings I can tweak with and fix or at least help with the problem. It's done this for as long as I can remember, it's starting to get really annoying though. An off topic question about encryption also. If my scanner is on a wildcard and hits on an encrypted talkgroup or if I program one, will the audio just come through unreadable or will my scanner just ignore it and do nothing? I'd like to know what encrypted talkgroups are in my area if that's possible.

First of all, where are you?? Knowing which system you're trying to listen to would be helpful.

In most cases, you will hear an encrypted talkgroup come through. Sounds like an an angry parakeet.

As far as the initial question, if you are scanning a bunch of different systems or sites at once, you can miss some transmissions because it takes the scanner a little bit to return to a previously scanner site/system. Program as few control channels as you need to, and that can help speed up the scanning. Also, check to see how the scanner handles Multi-site receiving- usually "stat- check all cc's: Yes" takes the longest with larges systems.

To better answer your encryption question, if you want to keep from hearing it then enter it into a list as a object then lock it out. it shouldn't stop on that encrypted tg again unless it's a new tg not programmed in a list. My 106 and 197 ignores those talkgroups even with the wildcard on. :)

Im actually curious if the number of talkgroups affects the speed on scanning. I want to say yes, but if someone can educate me on that as well.

How many frequencies do you have entered in your system in the receiver?
What is your "Multi-site" setting?

For the county system I have the primary control channels and the alternates programmed which is 4. For the statewide system I have the primary and alternate channels of the towers I'm within range of which is 10. The multi-site setting is set to "off".

The whole missing Trunked communications has nothing to do with what system he is listening to. The Pro-106 will do this with non trunked communications too. Example: While doing a limit search, the darn thing will get stuck on a frequency. You can see it's stopped but will hear nothing but a hiss. Something like the digital squelch is not opening up all the way. It will indeed do this with trunked systems. The symptom is the channel/frequency will hang and not open up all the way. Even turning the squelch all the way down to nothing will not always cure the issue.

You can also see this problem with P25 control frequencies. The problem even exists in tune mode. Example program in the control frequency and you wont be able to hear the packet data. The way around this is to manually tune up a few steps and back to the frequency. Sometimes it works, sometimes you have to do it a few times.

I am thinking some how it has to do with a squelch threshold?

In any case it's extremely frustrating.

I noticed that pause-no noise as well. Try having the alarm set to HI-LO like a siren.. Got old real fast. But-I too have these ( skips? ). While stopped on an analog freq it will give that ( skip ) like it is checking the priorty. I dont use the priority on the 106 or uniden. Leave that to the older equipment. Systems easy enough.
