Hello, I have a Pro-106 that does not have sound on FM.

The keyboard beeps when the buttons are pressed but I here no voice. It scans FM fine and the signal meter is active. The same goes for the WX scans.

If I switch to AM aircraft, all is normal. Squelch and volume work as they should.

I read this thread and come to realize that it may be a defective discriminator.

http://forums.radioreference.com/radio-shack-scanners/183600-pro-164-no-sound.html

Question is, is this gonna be an expensive repair or is it a simple component replacement?

Thanks!

Silly question, but did you do a full reset of the scanner?

They are conventional FM frequencies. Monmouth County, mostly Middletown, NJ and other local municipalities.

I've got a pro96 and a psr300 with the same programming and those two work perfectly.

I've even got them programmed for the NJ State police and some p25 on the pro96. Which makes me believe that the problem with the pro-106 is hardware related.

On the pro106, the weather station is full power, according to the moving signal meter but there is no voice... just the keyboard beep when you press a button.

Like I mentioned, on AM, it's like there is no problem with the scanner.

What happens when you turn the squelch right down on an FM frequency ? Have you tried a different antenna ?

Sounds like the Pro-106 is muting FM transmissions.

No effect on squelch no matter where it is set. Yes, I tried two other antennas that are known to work.

try setting it to auto instead of fm only, worked for me,upgrade your software/firmware,also are you rebounded or no?

I've read this board and other sites and I tried all other recommendations. That's how I found the thread I linked above. I have a strong hunch that it's a hardware issue. :-(

It actually sounds like you may have a hardware issue. You may need to send it in to be repaired.

Yeah. That's where I'm leaning. I'm trying to get an idea of what the repair will be and how hard it's gonna hit my pocket. Don't mind spending the money because it's a great scanner but I wanted to see if I could get and idea and possibly not get a sticker shock.

RS charges $20 for an estimate. Assuming the repair is authorized by you, the $20 is applied as a credit to the repair charge. HTH.
