Hi, I'm new to the scanning scene, and have recently moved to San Diego (UTC Area to be specific). I'm going to be purchasing a scanner from Radio Shack, and I'm just wanting an opinion between the PRO-107 and the PRO-164.

I don't mind buying a cable for the 164, and getting software to program it, that does't bother me at all. What I'm looking to listen to, pretty much, is police/fire here, and if possible, ATC/Air to Air from Miramar (I'm 1 mile off the runway). I don't know if what they do for that is encrypted or not, if it is, I won't be able to listen no matter what, I understand that. What would you guys recommend? Are there any major advantages to the 164 over the 107? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Maybe I should have put this in the Radio Shack forum. Can a mod please move this to the RS radio section please?

San Diego is digital. The 107 and 164 are analog scanners. You will need the 106.

Thanks Wayne for moving the thread, next time I'll use the report button :)

And thank you Larry for the heads up, I'm still learning how to read the database, I thought it had said SD was mostly all analog. I'll pick up the 106 Friday, and try to find someplace nearby that has a programming cable.

Thanks again

Radio Shack sells a programming cable. They had been selling 20-047 but have recently come out with a newer model cable. Either will work. You can also purchase a cable from GRE (online).

The GRE PSR-500 is the same scanner as the Radio Shack PRO-106, with some cosmetic differences (location of the speaker, etc). I'd suggest looking at the data in the Wiki section here and comparing the two. Of course if RS has a '106 in stock, that will be the model you can more quickly get your hands on. Good luck!

HRO in San Diego sells the GRE cable.

Thanks Larry! They are only 7 miles up the road per google maps. That should make my life easier

Well I had purchased the 107 at about the same thing this thread actually posted, and it was okay, but not great. I could hear allot of ambulances, but, not much more really. So, today, I took it back to RS, and got the 106 and programming cable, along with buying Win500.

All I can say is WOW! I LOVE this thing!
