Hello, I'm looking into getting a scanner. I was looking at the Pro 164 but it looks like the Pro 107 comes ready to go. Is that true or would the 164 be better? Or should I stay away from Radio Shack and go with like the Uniden 125AT? I live in an area with only analog police/fire activity, I was just thinking about getting a trunking scanner just in case, but I'm not sure its necessary. Thank you.

It depends - you should research your city/state (which would be helpful to know what that is) by looking in our database to see if there's a trunk system in your area. You say that your area is only analog police/fire - but these days, such a setup is sometimes fed from a patch to a trunked system.

You can do that by going up to the blue toolbar under the site title, float your mouse over Database then select Frequency Database You can then use the various pulldowns and maps to get to the area you live in

I would stick to the 164. It is, IMO, a better scanner for beginners. Granted the 107 appears to be ready to go, but, you will need to update the firmware and the SD card with the latest Radio Reference database. Getting around the software can cause early hair loss:D
But, since you have only conventional frequencies to monitor in your area, the BC125AT will be the better buy.

Is the Uniden scanner any better then the RS one? I don't mind spending the little extra if its better, but if Uniden makes a better product, then i would buy that. Thanks!

Don't have personal experience with the 125, but I do with the 163. The 125 is a new current scanner from Uniden. I believe that you will get better service from them. The 163/164 are older scanners. The only difference between the two, is that the 164 does track analog trunked systems.
If I had to choose between the two, I'd get a 125. GRE won't be making anymore scanners for RS since they've gone out of the scanner business.
